brakence

Ohio native brakence writes wistful, confessional songs about mental health, heartbreak, and his life experiences. His music has evolved from the complex, abstract rhythms of his early singles to the more focused emo-rap of his 2020 full-length punk2 and 2022's hypochondriac. Randy Findell was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 2001. Going by the name brakence, he began uploading songs to SoundCloud in 2016. His earliest tracks, such as "fifthenigma" and "nervosa," were highly unique fusions of arrhythmic beats, atmospheric samples, and light, airy vocals. Gradually his music became more melodic while retaining its idiosyncrasies, and his 2018 release hypnagogia incorporated emo-style vocals and lo-fi hip-hop beats. He followed hypnagogia with several singles and the 2019 EP bhavana, which moved closer to an alternative R&B sound. After briefly attending college at Ohio State University, Findell wrote "dropout," which became one of the most heavily streamed tracks on his 2020 album punk2. The record gained a following for its inventive production and personal lyrics, and brakence signed to Columbia, which released a version of "dropout" featuring blackbear, and an updated version of punk2 with additional single "sauceintherough." Another single, "argyle," appeared in 2021. The full-length hypochondriac was released at the end of 2022.
