Amatis Trio

Among Europe's rising young chamber music ensembles in the early 2020s, the Amatis Trio has earned placement in noteworthy talent development programs and won several major prizes. In addition to playing standard repertory, the group has a strong commitment to contemporary music. The Amatis Trio was formed in 2014 in Amsterdam and is now based in Salzburg, Austria. The original members were violinist Lea Hausmann, cellist Samuel Shepherd, and pianist Mengjie Han; in 2021, Han was replaced by Andrei Gologan. The trio benefited from studies with Wolfgang Redik of the Vienna Piano Trio and Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartett and also had guidance or influence from cellist Anner Bylsma and pianists András Schiff and Menahem Pressler, among others. In 2016, the Amatis Trio was named a BBC New Generation Artist, and it was added to the ECHO Rising Stars program in 2018. The Amatis Trio has performed Beethoven's Triple Concerto in C major, Op. 56, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester. Recital performances have taken the group to such major concert venues as the Konzerthaus Berlin, London's Wigmore Hall, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The Amatis Trio was named resident chamber ensemble at Cambridge University in 2019 and has been awarded the Irene R. Miller Piano Trio Residency. That year, the trio was signed to the CAvi-Music label and released its debut album, featuring trios by Enescu, Ravel, and Britten. Gramophone magazine gave the album favorable notice designating the trio as "One to Watch." In 2020, the group won the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust (BBT) Fellowship Award. The Amatis Trio joined clarinetist Ib Hausmann in 2022 for a recording of Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps on CAvi-Music. By that time, the group had performed in more than 40 countries across five continents, and its renown was truly international.
