10LEC6

This multi-faceted project which came together around street artist Simon and producer DJ Jess (of the duo Jess & Crabbe), and took the name 10LEC6, was really just born out of a desire to play hard and loud — but it has built itself a decent reputation on the stage and the dance floor alike, not to mention a track that was taken up by the successful series “Skins” and a tour with the Gossip. Influenced by dance-oriented post-punk (Bad Brains, ESG, Gang of Four, the Slits...) but also disco, house and electro-deviant sounds, 10LEC6 are on fine form with an enhanced line-up which puts the accents on the more de-structured (dyslexic, even) side of their project. But the new turn is marked out above all by the arrival of Nicole. The new singer comes from a gospel background, but can rap and yell too, all in Bulu (a Bantu language of southern Cameroon); and she brings 10LEC6 an Afro-punk flavour, with hints of tribal chant mixed with dance floor modernity. "Bedjem Mebok" gives us a glimpse of the forthcoming third album which will be brought out with Ed Banger, a label which has always championed different ways to dance. It's a cacophony of rhythm and bass carried by traditional sounds and vocal incantations which explode into an incandescent flow. The track comes with a thick sheaf of remixes which will see it on heavy rotation in clubs: from the acid house version from Full Circle (Joakim and Alexis-le-Tan's trance project) to the ghetto music edition from young Lisbon prodigy Dj BeBeDeRa, by way of the mad trance remix by JD Twich from Optimo. A bonus track, "What That Azz Do", a remix of a cover of a piece of the same name by DJ Funk, alongside "Bedjem Mebok" sketches out the contours and the musical colours of "Bone Bame", a third album of wild fusion and Bulu punk, whose release is eagerly awaited for this summer and which is set to give a perfect summary of 10LEC6's DNA: "a bassline no-one understands, crazy percussions, and a vocal gimmick that gets inside your head." © Patrick Thévenin/Because
