Smoke DZA: Homegrown Talent!

Door Brice Miclet |

Throughout his career, Smoke DZA has managed to surround himself with rappers from three different generations. He’s one of those rappers who’s brought continuity to New York rap. Homegrown is like a family reunion where all ages come together in pursuit of a common goal: to turn ten tracks into a highlight of American rap with a 2020 twang. This aim is shared by a line-up of producers that features artists such as The Alchemist (who’s at the forefront of the scene right now) as well as 183rd and younger musicians like Sonor.

Carefully and skilfully, the production team match the beats to the guest artists' respective styles. After all, it would’ve been a tall order asking Jadakiss and Flipp Dinero to rap over bright, sunny productions.

So instead, we get tracks like the dark Hibachi and 100 Years In The Duffle, beautifully produced by The Alchemist.

Homegrown is multifaceted. We find jazz piano on Bank Withdrawal (featuring Number and Tish Hyman) as well funky grooves on Santos Party House (featuring Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T. and Girl Talk). This album is further proof, as if we needed any, that Smoke DZA is at the top of his game. Hold tight for more classics to come.
