Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) in China, even Wagner wouldn’t have dared dreaming of that in his greatest phantasmagorias on the Gesamtkunstwerk taking over the world. And yet it’s the work the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra has decided to record, under the lead of its Music Director Jaap van Zweden, over four years of public performances – live recordings, which don’t spoil in any way the liveliness and continuity of the original work. If Wagner had had at his disposal such a talented orchestra, he would have certainly been stunned: in the East, his masterpiece is more than honoured… The stage, albeit not very Eastern (whereas the orchestra is in its overwhelming majority composed of local musicians), features some of today’s most seasoned voices, starting with New Zealander Simon O’Neill as Siegfried, American dramatic soprano Heidi Melton as Brünnhilde, and the outstanding Matthias Goerne as Wotan. The “reference versions” of the past years and decades now have serious reasons to worry about their unquestioned privileged status, even more so as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra isn’t held to sometimes burdensome traditions: it plays the music as if it had just been composed… © SM/Qobuz

The Tetralogy in China: even Wagner himself would never have dreamt it, even in his wildest dreams of world conquest armed with his "Gesamtkunstwerk". But Hong Kong Philharmonic finished recording the Götterdämmerung in January 2018, led by their musical director Jaap van Zweden. It is the product of four years of public performances and live recordings, a fine recipe for preserving the vivaciousness and continuity of the work. And if Wagner had had such a high-quality orchestra at his disposal, maybe he would have had the Bayreuth festival set up on the bank of the Pearl River in order to see real justice done for his masterpiece... The record itself brings in some of the most experienced voices of the time. The "touchstone versions" have some stiff competition in the form of this new complete edition. The Hong Kong Philharmonic may lack some of the sometimes-weighty "traditions" of some other outfits, but they play this music as if it had just been written… © SM/Qobuz

This 1968 recording of The Flying Dutchman was made in the studio under the baton of the venerable Ottom Klemperer who, incidentally, was approaching his 83rd birthday - he had just five years left to live. This record is simply a dream come true, with Theo Adam, Martti Talvela, Anja Silja and Annneliese Burmeister supported by the New Philharmonia and the BBC choir. Klemperer is known for his fairly rapid tempos, even if the singers themselves lend longer durations to the music, as the work is not short on quasi-recitatives. In this vein, this "almost" short work (short by Wagner's standards at least) offers a measured reading, very much oriented towards comprehension of the text and clarity of the orchestra. It goes without saying that it has been the subject of a meticulous remastering, so that it really doesn't feel like you are listening to a recording from half a century ago. Orchestral colours, balance between stage and orchestra, precise vocal presence: these all make for an unmissable, historic recording. © SM/Qobuz« This performance is as perfect as we have any right to demand. Klemperer’s magisterial interpretation of the opera has a blazing intensity, the orchestra plays superbly and the cast give of their considerable best.» Gramophone‘ With this remaster of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer, the listener is plunged into a stormy world of wind and water. The sound effects introduced for the first time by EMI on this recording are very effective, and the dramatic impact of the performance of Anja Silja as Senta is indisputable. This recording, made in the winter of 1968 at Abbey Road’s Studio One, utilises the Ambiophonic system whereby numerous speakers were added to the walls of the studio to increase reverberation and improve the overall acoustic of the studio. The LP master tapes used for this remaster derive directly from the original four-track masters therefore preserving sound and balance as approved by Klemperer at the time the recording was made, including the spectacular sound effects.’  Ian Jones, Remastering Engineer at Abbey Road Studios
