This new Vivaldi album marks a double anniversary, the thirty-year anniversary of the close collaboration between Cecilia Bartoli and the famous English label Decca, and the twenty-year anniversary of the very successful first Vivaldian opus. This time leaving behind Giovanni Antonini and his Il Giardino Armonico ensemble, Cecilia Bartoli has selected French musicians well versed in Vivaldi’s music, as if to demonstrate the universal nature of the Red Priest’s compositions. In fact, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and his Ensemble Matheus have distinguished themselves with Vivaldi’s instrumental music since their early days. They started off their collaboration with five concerts, dedicated of course to the Venetian composer, in Munich, Prague, Baden-Baden and Versailles. For their first recording together they selected ten opera titles, nine of which weren’t featured on the 1999 album. The plethora of Vivaldi operas provides an endless supply to recitalists who can easily put together, as is the case here, an extremely lively programme featuring the most beautiful gems of an extraordinarily expansive composer whose melodic liveliness has been a constantly fascinating topic. This release is also beautiful in itslef (accessible on your Qobuz account), as it features a photo book containing beautiful portraits of Cecila Bartoli taken by Roman photographer Viviane Purdom, who has devoted her life to masterfully shooting great classical musicians. Happy anniversary indeed! © François Hudry/Qobuz

The international success of after its premiere in 1859 completely overshadowed all of Gounod’s subsequent operas. He had known Goethe’s masterpiece for two decades and brought to the text his gifts for memorable melody and rich orchestration. Added to this, the plot of Faust’s ageing and the heroine Marguerite’s redemption, offered the opportunity for the most spectacular stage effects. Heard here in its 1864 London version with an additional air and without spoken dialogue or ballet, Faust represents 19th-century French opera at its peak. © Naxos

Composed in 1832 on a libretto refused by Mendelssohn who found that it was too close to Weber’s Freischütz, Wolfgang Marschner’s Hans Heiling never broke out of Germany nor acquired the success Marschner had hoped for. This romantic opera holds the seeds of all the ingredients that would hence be developed by Wagner, but Marschner did not surpass, according to Piotr Kaminski, a relative expressive banality that the libretto failed to conceal. Beyond its own qualities and flaws, Hans Heiling remains to hold great historical importance in German opera. It is, along with Le Vampire by the same composer, a unifier between Weber’s initial romanticism and accomplished works. We can already find here the tragic destiny of the damned romantic heroes: the impossibility to reconcile their human nature with the death drive. This recording, performed on stage during shows by the Essen opera in February 2018, gives precious information of a relatively forgotten period and shows how much Marschner wanted to combine the old (village fairs, drinking songs, love duets) with the new (a prologue precedes every opening of the curtain before the reveal of a redecorated stage). Certain melodies, like that of the Queen (O bleib bei mir) are well presented and Wagner would later remember them through his use of themes of Hans Heiling in the second act of his Walkyrie. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Having loved opera since he was a teenager, British composer George Benjamin admits that it took him too long to start composing opera and wishes he had more time to write more of it. Now nearly sixty years old, he even confesses that he has begun a race against the clock to complete all his operatic projects. Commissioned by the Royal Opera House in collaboration with six international opera houses, Lessons in Love and Violence (which premiered at Covent Garden in 2018) confirmed Benjamin’s talent, which he already showcased in his two previous operas, notably with Written on Skin which was written for the 2012 Aix-en-Provence Festival.Composed on Martin Crimp’s libretto and based on Marlowe’s famous tragedy, the work draws on Elizabethan theatre’s creativity and complex characters, which are played by an outstanding cast. Brimming with conspiracies, passion and violence, the story sees King Edward II opposing his wife and son as he is overcome by his love for the young French knight Piers Gaveston. Set in the 21st century, this terrible story of power and politics takes on chilling parallels with modern times.Following the DVD release of the original production in London, we find here a new audio version recorded under the direction of the composer at the 2018 Holland Festival. This recording boasts many of the spectacle’s original performers, such as the phenomenal Barbara Hannigan playing Queen Isabelle of France and Stéphane Degout in the role of the King - one of his best roles yet. This dense and powerful work was a huge success in London and the enthusiasm surrounding the opera was further reinforced following the productions in Lyon, Hamburg and Amsterdam, where this album was recorded. © François Hudry/Qobuz

An homage to the campy and spine-chilling horror films of the 1940s, the stage version of Acquanetta combines theater, opera and film to explore the world of a real-life B-movie star with a mysterious past. Known for her exotic beauty, Acquanetta—aka Mildred Davenport—was the star of such cult films as Captive Wild Woman, Jungle Woman, The Sword of Monte Cristo and Tarzan and the Leopard Woman, before she disappeared from public life. Michael Gordon’s soaring and often comic score, with text by librettist Deborah Artman, is a vivid metaphor for the ways in which the movie camera manipulates how we see and are seen. The cast of characters, featuring Mikaela Bennett (Acquanetta), Amelia Watkins (Brainy Woman), Eliza Bagg (Ape), Matt Boehler (Director) and Timur (Doctor), reveals inner longings and emotional shadows in a spooky meditation on identity, transformation, stereotypes and typecasting, set in the heyday of Hollywood glamour. The official studio recording of Acquanetta also features the Bang on a Can Opera Ensemble, conducted by Daniela Candillari. © Cantaloupe Music

Rossini’s Eduardo e Cristina was a huge success in its day, but as perhaps the last centone opera (one assembled from previously existing material) by a major composer, it became forgotten under the subsequent tide of Romantic idealism. Today we can put these prejudices aside and enjoy this masterful creation for what it is: a hugely entertaining parade of beautiful and spectacular musical ‘hits’ set to a familiar story of secret love, dramatic crisis and triumphant resolution. This "2017 Bad Wildbad" revival was summed up as ‘an evening of pure bel canto pleasure!’ by Operagazet. © Naxos

Gaetano Donizetti’s Ange de Nisida has had a strange history. It is never included in the composer’s list of operas for a very simple reason: Escaping Italian censorship, Gaetano Donizetti decided to have it performed in French in Paris. Rehearsals began in 1840, but stopped when the company went bankrupt. Donizetti ended up using some of this work in La Favorite, similar to the way Rossini used Il Viaggio a Reims in Le Comte Ory.Sir Mark Elder’s record is therefore a world premiere. The maestro is surrounded by outstanding soloists in this recording made in July 2018 at Covent Garden in London. The concert was made in collaboration with the label Opera Rara, dedicated to opera premieres. The opera’s libretto had never been printed before. At the French National Library, the piece required major archival research using three different manuscripts for it to be to put together. Candida Mantica worked as an archeologist carefully exploring and comparing numerous versions including the composer’s own manuscript. The scenes that were discovered were not in the right order and often not fully orchestrated.Though it was written for France and in French, the opera is a 100% Italian in its style. It shines as a wonderful discovery, even if it never changes our idea of Donizetti. Now that the record is out, we are looking forward to its rendition on stage. The plot takes place in the 15th century on a desert island, the way opera lovers liked at that time. The king of Naples is keeping his mistress a prisoner when a young and fiery tenor falls in love with her. The story goes through many twists, featuring the pope, between comedy and tragedy before its tragic ending for poor Sylvia, who dies, creating one more female martyr in the history of opera. © François Hudry/Qobuz
