Booklet
Since the year 2012, the association EntArteOpera has dedicated itself with yearly festivals to the alive culture of remembrance and the revival of the extensive opus of forgotten, ostracizes, persecuted by the Nazi regime, exiled or even murdered composers. The present recording's main focus is on songs and works by the female composers Henriette Bosmans, Vally Weigl, Charlotte Schlesinger and Vitezslava Kapralova, with the addition of the Love Song H. 259 by Bohuslav Martinu. Hermine Haselböck, mezzo-soprano, Franz Bartolomey, cello and pianist Clemens Zeilinger take you into the passionate and at the same time poetic sound worlds of four extraordinary female composers whose music is heard as rarity and discovery. © Gramola

An homage to the campy and spine-chilling horror films of the 1940s, the stage version of Acquanetta combines theater, opera and film to explore the world of a real-life B-movie star with a mysterious past. Known for her exotic beauty, Acquanetta—aka Mildred Davenport—was the star of such cult films as Captive Wild Woman, Jungle Woman, The Sword of Monte Cristo and Tarzan and the Leopard Woman, before she disappeared from public life. Michael Gordon’s soaring and often comic score, with text by librettist Deborah Artman, is a vivid metaphor for the ways in which the movie camera manipulates how we see and are seen. The cast of characters, featuring Mikaela Bennett (Acquanetta), Amelia Watkins (Brainy Woman), Eliza Bagg (Ape), Matt Boehler (Director) and Timur (Doctor), reveals inner longings and emotional shadows in a spooky meditation on identity, transformation, stereotypes and typecasting, set in the heyday of Hollywood glamour. The official studio recording of Acquanetta also features the Bang on a Can Opera Ensemble, conducted by Daniela Candillari. © Cantaloupe Music

Booklet
Having loved opera since he was a teenager, British composer George Benjamin admits that it took him too long to start composing opera and wishes he had more time to write more of it. Now nearly sixty years old, he even confesses that he has begun a race against the clock to complete all his operatic projects. Commissioned by the Royal Opera House in collaboration with six international opera houses, Lessons in Love and Violence (which premiered at Covent Garden in 2018) confirmed Benjamin’s talent, which he already showcased in his two previous operas, notably with Written on Skin which was written for the 2012 Aix-en-Provence Festival.Composed on Martin Crimp’s libretto and based on Marlowe’s famous tragedy, the work draws on Elizabethan theatre’s creativity and complex characters, which are played by an outstanding cast. Brimming with conspiracies, passion and violence, the story sees King Edward II opposing his wife and son as he is overcome by his love for the young French knight Piers Gaveston. Set in the 21st century, this terrible story of power and politics takes on chilling parallels with modern times.Following the DVD release of the original production in London, we find here a new audio version recorded under the direction of the composer at the 2018 Holland Festival. This recording boasts many of the spectacle’s original performers, such as the phenomenal Barbara Hannigan playing Queen Isabelle of France and Stéphane Degout in the role of the King - one of his best roles yet. This dense and powerful work was a huge success in London and the enthusiasm surrounding the opera was further reinforced following the productions in Lyon, Hamburg and Amsterdam, where this album was recorded. © François Hudry/Qobuz

The Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896–1967) felt the fascination for A Florentine Tragedy, Oscar Wilde’s drama of love and violence in Renaissance Italy, that also attracted his near-contemporary Alexander Zemlinsky: they set the same libretto. Flury responded to the text with this dark and swirling one-act verismo opera, sizzling with sexual tension, the vocal lines of the three characters unfolding over an orchestral texture remarkable for its plasticity and kaleidoscopic colour. It is preceded here by a dignified but impassioned operatic scena setting Grillparzer’s dramatic treatment of the suicide of the Greek poetess Sappho. © Toccata Classics
