With an offbeat cover that looks a little like a 1950s Hollywood movie poster, Hervé Niquet and his Concert Spirituel are offering up a dive into the world of French 17th and 18th century opera, with works by Mondonville, Rameau, Campra, Dauvergne, Francoeur, Leclair, Lully, Charpentier, Marais and rediscovered works by figures with some very Ancien Régime names such as François Colin de Blamont or Toussaint Bertin de la Doué. But behind this procession of names is Hervé Niquet's impish humour: he has cobbled together an imaginary opera to mark 30 years of the Concert Spirituel. He tells the story in his own, inimitable words: "Our story is very simple: a young lead, a courageous fop, loves a most beautiful princess. But an evil sorceress, jealous of this idyll, sets out to hurt our pair however she can. But my lord! Of course! That's exactly the story of an American show that I watched on Thursday afternoons when I was younger: Bewitched! I imagined a cover with a photo of our beloved trio and I showed it to our editor: everyone in the office burst out laughing. Katherine (Watson) alias Samantha, Karine (Deshayes) who plays Endora and Reinoud (van Mechelen) who becomes Darrin Stephens have all become used to my ways and they haven't taken umbrage at this comparison. See how simple the elements of opera are! And at the end of the day, this is the story of a thirty-year love affair with the Concert Spirituel. So: vive le pastiche, and vive Bewitched! Recorded in October 2017 at the Opéra Royal de Versailles in collaboration with the Versailles Baroque Music Centre and the Concert Spirituel, this imaginary opera is very much in keeping with the rules of an era when pasticci abounded and scores weren't set in stone but evolved to match opportunities and singers' personalities. Happy birthday, then, to the Concert Spirituel! © François Hudry/Qobuz

Alessandro Stradella’s place in the annals of the history of music is not only due to the adventurous circumstances that marked his brief existence, but also to the reputation as a opera composer he has acquired since the 18th century. Inaccessible for many decades to specialists and scholars, La Doriclea is definitely the least known of all Stradella’s operas. However, it constitutes a particularly significant chapter in his overall output: composed in Rome during the early 1670s, to our knowledge La Doriclea represents the first opera entirely composed by Stradella. From the dramatic point of view, La Doriclea belongs to the comedy of intrigue genre typical of the 17th century Spanish theatre tradition. Refined and amusing, it alternates touching lamentos with irresistibly comic scenes, in which the character of Giraldo, a veritable precursor of the basso buffo, allows us to glimpse Rossinian atmospheres. Emőke Baráth (Doriclea) and Xavier Sabata (Fidalbo) alongside Giuseppina Bridelli (Lucinda) and Luca Cervoni (Celindo) and the comic couple of Delfina (Gabriella Martellacci) and Giraldo (Riccardo Novaro) bring a complex and fascinating role-playing game to life. This world premiere release of La Doriclea is a major achievement for "The Stradella Project", which here reaches its fifth volume. © Arcana

We'll admit: this Reine de Chypre by Fromental Halévy is probably not the unfairly-overlooked work of commanding genius for which the lyrical world has been waiting for fifty years… But it would still be a shame to miss it, especially when performed by such a line-up, with Véronique Gens, Cyrille Dubois and Etienne Dupuis at the top of the bill. And after all, the score is full of vocal marvels and very original ensembles; but it is rather in the orchestration – which is not much more adventurous than that of any other piece of Italian bel canto of the era – that Halévy has taken it easy. The melodic richness was pointed out in an article in the Revue et gazette musicale in April 1842: "In the Reine de Chypre, Halévy's new style is on display with more dash, and more success. I have had occasion to point out the preconditions, as I see them, of the production of a good opera, by pointing out the obstacles which stand in the way of meeting these conditions fully and in good time, whether by the poet or the composer. When these conditions are met, it is an event of great importance for the world of art. Now, in the present case, circumstances have conspired in the performance of a work which, as even the most exacting critic must admit, possesses all the qualities which constitute a good opera. (…) The composer has put all the enchantment of his art into the duet that breathes the sentiments that enrapture them. The dark cloth on which these two charming figures are drawn shows through even in those songs which are so sparkling and alive with happiness, like a sinister cloud, and lends them a particular character of melancholy intrigue. There is no equal, in nobility or in grace, of the magnificent melody of the final part of this duet." The article continues in this vein. The byline? One Richard Wagner… © SM/Qobuz

The latest striking release from soprano Roberta Invernizzi acts as a lightning conductor for this new vocal extravaganza from Glossa devoted to the Italian Baroque composer Francesco Gasparini. Invernizzi finds herself very much home both in the music – which was originally first-performed around the turn of the eighteenth century and which provided “influences” for Handel, who was Gasparini’s junior by some 20 years – but also, so noticeably, with the words: librettos from the likes of Zeno, Piovene or Salvi find this singer exercising her customary intelligence. Carlo Ipata, directing his ensemble Auser Musici, combines his natural and obvious flair for Italian and music of the time – he has also recorded the opera Il Bajazet for Glossa – with the painstaking demands of the research required to identify brilliant arias from slumbering the various shades of neglect. Gasparini wrote some sixty operas, as well as oratorios and many cantatas. For Invernizzi Ipata has crafted a beguiling selection from this abundance of music which proved so successful in both princely soirées in Rome and public theatres in Venice. Arias come from operas such as Il Roderigo and Amleto and oratorios such as L’oracolo del Fato and Atalia. As well as the cantata, Andate o miei sospiri, composed by Gasparini as part of a challenge undertaken jointly with Alessandro Scarlatti, Ipata and Auser Musici have added an attractive flute concerto written during his time as a teacher at Venice’s Ospedale della Pietà. © Glossa
