It has been a long time, and probably stretching all the way back to the now-distant, legendary concerts led by Carlos Kleiber in 1989 and 1992, since we have enjoyed a New Year's Concert of such quality. With the Latvian Andris Nelsons (known and liked by the Philharmoniker) conducting, this first concert of 2020 had a fluent elegance, a rhythmical verve which was both light and implacable, and a kind of song that allowed the Viennese strings to show off their incredibly silky texture and profound depth. Andris Nelsons is clearly very much at ease with this repertoire, and brings a very refined approach to this novel programme. Hits sit alongside lesser-known pieces, including Beethoven's Contredanses kicking off the German’s anniversary year with a bang. Nelson gleefully swaps his baton for a trumpet, his favourite instrument, and gets stuck into the Postillon Galop by the "Danish Johann Strauss", Hans Christian Lumbye. This original programme brings us Knall und Fall, a rapid polka from Eduard Strauss, Cupido, a delightful French (slow) polka by Josef Strauss and Joseph Hellmesberger's Gavotte and some other tasty Viennese treats making it into the New Year's Concert for the first time. The ebullient audience was also very keen to hear some more conventional favourites: and no-one was disappointed by the stunning rendition of the famous Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, played at a diabolical pace, with phenomenal virtuosity from these Viennese musicians, who remain the unchallenged masters of this repertoire. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Like every year, the Vienna Musikverein welcomes the musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to its great hall! German conductor Christian Thielemann will be the man with the baton for the traditional 2019 New Year concert, which will open with Carl Michael Ziehrer’s Schönfeld Marsch op.422. Named as musical director of the imperial court balls in 1907, putting an end to the Strauss dynasty’s tenure in this position, Ziehrer wrote around 600 compositions for orchestra (waltzes, polkas, marches etc.) and 23 operettas, including the Schönfeld Marsch. Named as the head of the Viennese orchestra for the first time, succeeding many renowned conductors (from Daniel Barenboim to Lorin Maazel, Nikolaus Harnoncourt or Gustavo Dudamel), Thielmann is familiar with the Strauss dynasty’s repertoire - he recorded (amongst others) An Alpine Symphony, Op. 64 and Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) in March 2011 with the Wiener Philharmoniker. For this concert, which is broadcast in 92 countries, he leads the most beautiful of repertoires from the Strauss era (Künstlerleben op. 316, Die Tänzerin. Polka française op. 351, Lob der Frauen. Polka Mazur, op. 315…). © Sandra Dubroca/Qobuz

It is the third time that Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons is invited to direct the prestigious New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, having previously done so in both 2006 and 2012. This concert, broadcast direct across the planet to about 90 million viewers, will certainly honour the Strauss dynasty: Johann father, Johann son, Josef and Eduard, but also the composer of operettas and film scores Robert Stolz (1880 - 1975), Carl Ziehrer, Emil Waldteufel and Josef Hellmesberger. The majority of waltzes and polkas by Strauss from a big part of the habitual content for the New Year's Concert supply, but eight works are really offered first. They will end unquestionably with Vienna's least kept secret, The Blue Danube Waltz and The Radetzky March. It is worth noting that this will mark the 75th anniversary of the birth of the New Years Concert in Vienna. © SM/Qobuz
