For a truly great interpretation it’s not enough just to play a historical instrument, the playing also has to be up to scratch. This recording released by the world-renowned label ECM showcases a pianist of the highest calibre playing the wonderful Viennese Brodmann piano. András Schiff captures the convergence of thought and sound remarkably well and seldom before have we been given so much insight into Schubert’s innermost thoughts. The softness and the unmistakable legato that the pianist produces on this Viennese instrument give the Sonatas D. 958 and D. 959 an indescribable feeling of nostalgia. But Schubert’s inward revolt was growing and András Schiff leads us steadily to the edge of the abyss. The crystalline sounds of the Scherzo in the Sonata D. 959 are as enchanting as the sound of ancient harpists who were so often depicted by German Romantics. This exploration into sound is also marvellous in the Impromptus D. 899 and the 3 Klavierstücke D. 946 or “Three Piano Pieces”, which have a very expressive counterpoint that differ from the unfathomable depth of the sonatas. This album is a revelation into a whole new world of sound that is unveiled as András Schiff’s fingers touch the keys. Inspiring. © François Hudry/Qobuz

The mysterious virtuoso and world-renowned soloist and recitalist Evgeny Kissin doesn’t often venture into the realm of chamber music. The Emerson Quartet were therefore presented with a unique opportunity when they were offered to do an eight-concert tour of Germany and the United States with the famous pianist. For this album, Deutsche Grammophon decided to record their last performance together at Carnegie Hall in New York on April 27, 2018 and after much deliberation the decision was finally made to perform two major pieces in a minor key. The first is Mozart’s famous Quartet in G minor, and for the second we delve into the world of romanticism with just a hint of nostalgia with the young Gabriel Fauré’s Quartet in C minor. The concert ends with Dvořák’s light-hearted and joyful Quintet in A major, with its undertones of Czech folklore. No musician tried to steal the show as the collective priority seemed to be performing these masterpieces classically. The musicians work together humbly and cooperatively in an intimate atmosphere that feels more like they’re in a living room than a legendary concert hall. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Over the past five years, pianist Anna Vinnitskaya has made three Alpha recordings dedicated to Shostakovitch, Brahms et Rachmaninov. Evgeni Koroliov is a great master of the piano, a great Bach specialist, whose recordings of Bach are an acclaimed benchmark. His piano duo with his wife, Ljupka Hadzi-Georgieva, has made its mark over the past few years in all the major international concert venues. Also a highly reputed teacher, Koroliov was Anna Vinnitskaya’s professor at Hamburg. ‘Though I no longer study with him, I still meet and talk with him several times a week,’ she confides. ‘That helps me further in my development, not just as a pianist but as a human being.’ These three Slavonic pianists, who for some time have been aiming to record the Bach concertos as a team, decided to invite a German ensemble that is itself highly expert in Bach interpretation, the Potsdam Chamber Orchestra; they recorded this double album in a legendary venue where some of the greatest artists have recorded: the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin. © Alpha Classics

A is for “Amadeus,” and a recording which marks a return to the source for Quatuor Zaïde, who dedicate their fourth collection to the genius Austrian composer. Z is for Zaïde, a “Singspiel” by Mozart in the style of Die Zauberflöte, which historical transcription for string quartet is a world premiere! Paired with the Quartet in G Major, No. 14, K. 387, this miniature version of one of the most famous operas repeatedly casts each instrument of the quartet in a multitude of lyric roles, celebrating the eternal dialogue between singing and playing. © Nomadmusic

Born in Bamberg in 1987 to a German mother and Korean father, Christopher Park is the product of two prestigious piano traditions: the Russian school where he was taught by Lev Natochenny and the German school where he was taught by Joachim Volkmann. The two approaches to teaching are often contradictory and Park is constantly required to make a choice by combining the approaches of the two schools according to the piece he is playing and according to his own personality. In addition to his solo career, Christopher Park is an experienced chamber musician and a sought-after accompanist for lieder, a genre in which he has already recorded three albums with Richard O’Neill and Sumi Jo. His two recitals were released by Deutsche Grammophon and a first solo album released by Oehms Classics which placed Schumann’s Fantaisie alongside pieces by Stravinsky (Three Movements from Petrushka) and Olga Neuwirth (Marsyas). Here he is again for the same label in a program entirely dedicated to Robert Schumann in which he performs Arabesque, Concerto without orchestra, Blumenstück and Carnival of Vienna. Christopher Park is a pianist who captivates with his beautiful sound, the fluidity of his playing and the flawless sound material of his instrument that is neither heavy nor ostentatious. The directness of his approach allows him to get straight to conveying the heartfelt voice and emotion that are so characteristic of Schumann’s work. It was these musical abilities that impressed the judges of the Leonard Bernstein Prize at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival launched in 2014 and he won alongside musicians Lang Lang and Lisa Batiashvili. Christopher Park is also a dreamer who loves nature and taking a walk in the woods to recharge his batteries between trips. “Music never stops” he says, “it’s always in my head”. © François Hudry/Qobuz
