Born 16 December 1923, today Menahem Pressler is, without a shadow of a doubt, the king of pianists, just as Mieczysław Horszowski was in the 1980s. Founder of the Beaux-Arts Trio, great and much-overlooked performer of French music, in his thirties he laid down some of the greatest recordings of Debussy (La Boîte à joujoux, Estampes, Suite bergamasque, Arabesques, La plus que lente, Rêverie) of the 1950s, for the American label MGM Records (but he also made several LPs dedicated to Prokofiev which are now completely forgotten, and the Histoires by Jacques Ibert...). Today, for Deutsche Grammophon, he has cast his mind back to that time when, standing on American soil, everything still lay ahead of him; and he has written a beautiful programme, largely centred around Debussy with the composer's greatest hits (Arabesques, Clair de lune from the Suite bergamasque, several Préludes from Livre I such as La fille aux cheveux de lin), finishing with Fauré (Barcarolle No. 6) and finally Ravel ( Pavane pour une infante défunte, Oiseaux tristes). Pressler is keeping alive another piano tradition, with his sound, his sense of style, and quite simply his spirit. His Clair de lune is full of this spirit, without ever falling into mawkishness, or losing its tone of softly-spoken confidence. But for pity's sake, Universal Music: re-release all of Pressler's solo pieces for MGM Records. Bringing back this inestimable and now-completely-inaccessible legacy would be a truly fitting tribute to this great artist. © Théodore Grantet/Qobuz

With the exception of one sole Rossini piece – and even then, the text isn't very Italian as it's the Cats' Duet whose only lyric is "miaow" – this whole programme is dedicated to French works, mostly vocal, with a couple for solo piano. Sophie Karthäuser and Eugene Asti have set off on a wild goose, pig, dromedary, cricket, crow, and fox hunt, keeping an eye out for many other furry, feathered and scaly beasts along the way, with Ravel, Chabrier, Offenbach, Hahn, Bizet, and Poulenc for company – all of whom have written music for creatures great and small, real and fantastical. Alright, on occasion these animals might not be animals, strictly speaking, like Satie's Statue de bronze (although the statue in question is of a frog), or The Little Shepherd from Children’s Corner by Debussy. Another rarity: there are three melodies from Poulenc's Bestiaire which have been left out of most recent editions: La Colombe, La Puce and Le Serpent. © SM/Qobuz

Two years after its very well received recording of three Schumann quartets, Quatuor Hermès – created about ten years ago – is turning its attention to three staple French masterpieces: Ravel and Debussy’s quartets (two iconic figures of their − relatively young − generation who have been coupled on disc again and again, but who would complain?) surrounding Dutilleux’s quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the Night). Three very unique quartets, as each of their composers only wrote a single one. For the record, Debussy’s quartet still belongs to the 19th century as it was composed in 1893 in a language formally borrowing from Franck (even if the chord progressions already feel like classic Debussy), while Ravel’s inaugurates the 20th century in 1903 with Faurean notes in abundance… On the other hand, Dutilleux waited to achieve maturity (1976) to write his. An inescapable monument of 20th French chamber repertoire, played with finesse and transparency by Quatuor Hermès, cementing their place among the elite quartets of our time. © SM/Qobuz

This fruitful “encounter” between Leonard Bernstein and Maurice Ravel juxtaposes Bernstein’s intensity and rhythmic vitality with the melancholy refinement of Ravel’s colours, while also highlighting the composers’ commonalities, such as a shared tonal language and masterful incorporation of jazz idioms. Our purpose, however, is not only to appreciate an artistic cross-exchange but also to build upon it. This is what Trio Zadig and Benjamin Attahir seek in Asfar, a new work that springs from the creative nexus of these 20th-century giants and continues the conversation. © Outhere Music

Here is an album filled with piano reminiscences of the highest level: Russian pianist Ludmila Berlinskaya is descendant of an impressive dynasty of musicians (her father was a cellist and the founder of the Borodin Quartet) who grew up around some of the greatest geniuses of the Soviet Union − Rostropovich, Oistrakh, Goldenweiser, Flier, Temirkanov, Svetlanov, Rozhdestvensky, Kitayenko, Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov. Later, before launching her great international career, she didn’t think twice about working as Richter’s page-turner, before becoming a sort of “spiritual daughter” for the great master. Undeniably her piano technique, as clear as a diamond and devoid of any damper effect – polyphonic lines are held by the fingers, as they should be – is evocative of Richter’s. The album’s title draws from Medtner’s Sonata “Reminiscenza”, a wonderful masterpiece that is unfortunately never played, but the other three works, much like Medtner’s Sonata, end pianissimo with a certain sense of melancholy: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30, Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales (Noble and Sentimental Waltzes), and Schumann’s Kreisleriana. © SM/Qobuz

This is not exactly an easy program offered up to us by diabolical Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili (* 1987): Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, Ravel's La Valse and the Three movements from Petrushka by Stravinsky - three of the biggest and fiercest works of the piano repertoire. After her Liszt and Chopin albums, the new album shows that young and spirited musician has a bright future, even though her career has already seen her appear on some of the world's brightest stages, with orchestras of the highest order. To compar her to a young Martha Argerich is not far from the truth... It is up to the listener to decide whether he/she wishes to be led astray into extreme extraordinary sounds, rhythms and rubato, all of which are embraced by Buniatishvili, but it is clear that her charm, power and persuasion are most compelling. © SM / Qobu
