With both of their lives cut short before they reached forty years of age, one from tuberculosis and the other from syphilis, the piano sonatas that Weber and Schubert left behind have either long been forgotten or are unheard of among pianists and the public. Luckily, this has been rectified for Schubert’s works thanks to pioneering pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Wilhelm Kempff, but more must be done for the works of Carl Maria von Weber who is still primarily known for his opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman). It takes an exceptional musician to bring forgotten music back to life and that is exactly what Paul Lewis does in this new album after having previously released fantastic interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert under the same French record label, Harmonia Mundi. Weber was around at the same time as Beethoven and was one of the first piano virtuosos from the beginning of the 19th century. His dazzling technique can be heard in this Sonata No.2 in A flat major which is both a virtuosic and a classic work that opened the door to romanticism for many other composers thereafter. The Sonata in B major, D 575 is actually from the same year that Schubert celebrated his twentieth birthday and sought independence from his parents to become a prolific composer, despite all the risks that came with a career as an independent artist at that time. This captures the beginning of romanticism and is an original and exciting pairing between two composers who appreciated each other’s work, but whose styles were diametrically opposed: the bright lights and panache for Weber and the melancholy soul for Schubert. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Ably written around the figure of the woman in Schubert's Lieder, this new album by Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton uses verse from poets Helmina von Chézy, Marianne von Willemer, or poems with a female protagonist, like Goethe's Mignon and Gretchen; Ellen in Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott, translated into German. The album closes with the mother of mothers, on the famous Ave Maria. Dubbed "the best British soprano of early music by far" by the press in her own country, this English diva has a rare versatility, which allows her to move from the extreme difficulty of Semele (Handel) to Stravinsky's Noces, by way of Bach, which she sings with outstanding representatives of such different aesthetics as Masaaki Suzuki, Philippe Herreweghe and Riccardo Chailly. Maturity has brought a new roundness and a very even plenitude to the spirited and sensual voice of Carolyn Sampson, who forms an excellent duet with pianist Joseph Middleton, who is often compared by the British press to the great Gerald Moore. The Times has even called him "the cream of the new generation", and he specialises in accompanying the world's greatest voices, racking up recording after recording and concert after concert. © François Hudry/Qobuz

No, no, we're not going to pretend that the repertoire chosen by the Austrian-Persian (the nationality stated on his website... born in 1992) cellist Kian Soltani and the Austrian pianist Aaron Pilsan is completely original: Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata, recorded a thousand and one times, and Schumann's Fantasiestücke form the backbone of the record. But what's really remarkable here is Soltani's career: the soloist made his big international breakthrough in 2011 at the age of 19, with triumphant débuts at the Vienna Musikverein, and then First Prize at the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki in 2013. Shortly thereafter he joined Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, firstly as the first solo cellist, and then as one of the soloists in Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Strauss's Don Quixote still with Barenboim. Concerts followed in Berlin, the Salzburg and Lucerne festivals, and the BBC Proms, as a soloist or in a chamber ensemble. A brilliant career, off to a flying start. The album listing finds a touch of originality at the end, with Persian Folklore by the Iranian composer Reza Vali (b. 1952), a piece of writing inspired by Kodály's own translations of popular Hungarian music into classical language. © SM/Qobuz

Vilde Frang’s Homage is more than a captivating programme of short pieces for violin and piano, it is also a homage to the players of the Golden Age of the Violin, such as Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Auer and Joseph Szigeti. Vilde Frang has conceived the album as something of a homage to her illustrious predecessors. Born in 1986, she is clearly very much a violinist of today, and – as a Norwegian trained in Germany – she did not grow up in the Central and Eastern-European tradition of Heifetz, Kreisler, Auer and Szigeti. That being said, she brings her own, distinctively captivating magic to her instrument. © Warner Classics

In 1955 Britten’s composed Still Falls the Rain, a setting for tenor, piano and horn of a poem by Edith Sitwell – the third of his five Canticles, written at various points in his life between 1947 and 1974, with three of them written as memorials: it is not a cycle as such, but merely a collection; instrumentation differs on each piece, and several are based on non-sacred texts. Sitwell, who attended the first performance, was overwhelmed by the work and her response led her to be invited to the 1956 Aldeburgh Festival where she and Britten would collaborate on a programme of her poetry to include further settings specially written for the occasion by Britten, for the same cast: tenor, horn and piano, with an additional narrator for some poems deliberately not set to music. For the event, entitled The Heart of the Matter, Britten composed extra music to surround and complement Canticle III which formed the centrepiece of the presentation. In 1983, Peter Pears revised and revived the work, and it is in this version that The Heart of the Matter has been performed since. For the world premiere, Sitwell recited her poems, Britten was at the piano, Peter pears sung and Dennis Brain tooted the horn. For the present recording, Christophe Prégardien sings and narrates the poems, Olivier Darbellay plays the horn, Michael Gees is at the piano. As a complement to the Britten work, the trio plays several songs from the Romantic period written for piano, horn and voice, by Conradin Kreutzer, Franz Lachner and Henry Hugh Pierson, closing that superb album with Schubert’s Auf dem Strom.
