Haydn2032, the ambitious project of recording the complete symphonies of Haydn, has been placed from the start under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, with two ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico, which made the first four volumes, and the Kammerochester Basel, to which this fifth volume and the next two are assigned. Another characteristic of the edition is that each time Haydn is set in perspective with another composer; here it is Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-92): ‘Kraus was the first man of genius that I met. Why did he have to die? It is an irreparable loss for our art. The Symphony in C minor he wrote in Vienna specially for me is a work which will be considered a masterpiece in every century’, said Haydn in 1797. Though he long remained forgotten after his death, Kraus made an active contribution to the movement of poetic renewal called ‘Sturm und Drang’ or ‘Geniezeit’ (time of genius) because such artists as the young Goethe broke free of all tradition to follow their hearts alone. When Haydn called Kraus homme de génie, in French, he probably had this context in mind. The two composers had met in Vienna in 1783. © Alpha Classics

It's true, we admit: no-one is really waiting for a new recording of Stravinsky's Firebird – even of the 1945 Suite, which is more rarely performed than the rather hackneyed one of 1919. But what's original about this album from the Orchestre National d’Ile-de-France is rather the rare work by Milhaud: La Bien-Aimée, a ballet from 1928 which had the considerable misfortune of being first performed at the same concert as Ravel's Boléro – which, of course, eclipsed everyone and everything else. But this Bien-Aimée is not without its charms; it is in fact a series of orchestrations of Liszt and Schubert, with one piece for pianola! Yes, the pianola, the mechanical piano which doesn't play quite as "automatically" as all that, given that the human musician decides the tempo, the dynamics and the balances themselves. The difficulty of course lies in perfectly synchronising the pianola and the orchestra: but here, it is pulled off perfectly. Milhaud's orchestrations of this music by Liszt and Schubert are a lot of fun, and Milhaud enjoys a few flashes of genius, and on occasion an unlikely orchestral hodgepodge with neither head nor tail but which, oddly, hits the mark, if in a somewhat slapstick manner. One to discover! © SM/Qobuz

Composed against a cataclysmic backdrop of Stalinist oppression and the Second World War, Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony is a deeply affecting poem of suffering. The composer described it as 'an attempt to reflect the terrible tragedy of war', and it contains some of the most terrifying music he ever wrote. Here, Gianandrea Noseda conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with intensity and understanding, allowing the music to tell its own story as it travels from darkness into light, yearning more for peace than for victory. One of the leading conductors of his generation, Gianandrea Noseda holds several high-profile international positions in addition to his role as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, including Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC. His previous releases on LSO Live include acclaimed interpretations of the Verdi Requiem and Britten War Requiem, and this recording follows the digital release of Shostakovich: Symphony No 5, which will receive a full release in October 2019 coupled with the composer's First Symphony. © harmonia mundi
