No, this is not a re-edit, but really a brand new recording – January 2017 – made by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and Marek Janowski. In addition to the vigorous and explosive Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, the theme in question stemming from Schiller’s version of Gozzi’s Turandot, the recording also features the rarer – and much less “fun” – Nobilissima visione suite. In the initial eponymous ballet from which the suite is derived, Hindemith depicted in musical tones a few episodes of the life of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as Saint Francis of Assisi. The last movement depicts, provided such a text can even be depicted, the Canticle of the Sun; Hindemith turns it into an immense and intense passacaglia that instead of actually “telling” the Canticle, manages to convey its sheer grandeur. The album closes on another splendour, Konzertmusik for Brass and String Orchestra, Op. 50 from 1930, as ordered by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Orchestra. In the great polyphonic tradition, the composer “opposes” groups, in this case the brass – 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, 1 tuba – and the strings (for which the partition requires the largest possible headcount), resulting in a fantastic musical, contrapuntal and architectural richness, not to mention a touch of humour in the race between both ensembles in the second part, as the brass play a rather quirky waltz with jazzy accents and the strings a much more “serious” style is adopted. For anyone barely familiar with Hindemith, these two latest works are a must-have, and more than likely a true revelation! © SM/Qobuz

Some music lovers are familiar with Ce qu’on entend sur la montagne, Liszt’s symphonic poem based on Victor Hugo. But who knows that, ten years earlier, César Franck was inspired by the same poem? This early piece is recorded here by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck. They couple it with the famous Symphony in D minor, dedicated to Henri Duparc and premiered, without much success, in 1889. Even if the score is quite well-known today, in the end it is performed quite rarely, which is a pity, because it really has all the characteristics of a masterpiece: melodic and harmonic inspiration, refined orchestration, variety of mood, an ingenious structure. Two works by Franck ... by Franck! This album marks the beginning of a collaboration between Alpha and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, which will focus on very varied repertories. © Alpha Classics

Is the imitation of rolling thunder, howling winds and bleating sheep a form of musical composition worthy of the name? Can we take seriously a composer who boasts of being able to ‘set a restaurant menu to music, if need be’? These were the kinds of questions that Richard Strauss, one of the most virtuosic composers of the so-called ‘programme music’, had to ask himself. His answer: ‘I am a musician from head to toe; for me, all “programmes” are merely incentives to invent new forms, nothing else.’ The NDR Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof Urbański, has chosen to devote its sixth Alpha Classics recording to three of Richard Strauss’s most famous symphonic poems: Also sprach Zarathustra Op. 30, Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche Op. 28 and Don Juan Op. 20. © Alpha Classics

The premiere of Mahler’s Third Symphony took place in June 1902 in Krefeld (not far from Düsseldorf), but it was indeed the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne which gave that first performance... greeted with acclaim – this was not always the composer’s experience with his masterpieces. Originally conceived as a hymn to Nature, in which the inert chaos of the opening movement is gradually left behind, the work calls for enormous forces (large orchestra, women’s choir, boys’ choir, and contralto soloist) and at each hearing leaves an unforgettable impression on the audience. Such was the case in October 2018, when François-Xavier Roth led the esteemed successors of the work’s first interpreters in this latest Mahler adventure. © harmonia mundi

Pierre Henry, a supreme innovator in the field of sound aesthetics, opened the gates to many other musical universes through the applications of his technological research. Fascinated by Beethoven from an early age, he composed a ‘Tenth Symphony’: ‘It’s not the one Beethoven made sketches for’, he said. ‘Nor is it a synthesis of the nine. It is essentially a combinatorial work. It’s also a tribute to the man who hoped to exceed the limits of the orchestra. Perhaps a way of painting my portrait (our portrait) through this music and the influence it has had on mine. It is a dreamlike, logical and respectful trajectory through what these symphonies contain and suggest. The work deliberately uses as “raw material” only notes, groups or motifs from the nine symphonies.’ There are three electroacoustic versions (1979, 1988, 1998), but it is the unpublished symphonic version that is presented here. It was premiered in November 2019 at the Cité de la Musique in the Philharmonie de Paris, by three orchestras, two choirs and three conductors: the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris, the Choeur de Radio France and Le Jeune Choeur de Paris, under the direction of Pascal Rophé, Bruno Mantovani and Marzena Diakun. Pierre Henry died on 5 July 2017. He would have loved to have heard his Dixième Symphonie de Beethoven as we are now able to. © Alpha Classics
