Chopin’s Piano Concertos are works of a twenty-year old composer and ambitious soloist. Powerful and challenging, their romantic dimension also carries sensitive effusions. This duality is highlighted here by an interpretation on period instruments in a chamber version. Choices that are as many clues to recognize the musicians from the Cambini-Paris Quartet and their accomplices: Pianist David Lively and Double bassist Thomas de Pierrefeu. Direct heir to Chopin’s piano teaching legacy, David Lively chose a vintage Érard piano to record both Concertos. Accompanied by a string quintet, he revives the tradition of the genre: before being performed in big concert halls, composers and pianists like Chopin played their latest scores in music lovers’ salons. The broad ambitus covered by the strings and the richness of the sound of the pianoforte respect the symphonic dimension of those two pieces. A musical quest for fidelity and authenticity to music and musicians, and a gift for the listeners! © Aparté

In September 2017, during the Brussels Chopin Days, the annual concert season entirely dedicated to the music of the Polish composer, Vestard Shimkus gave a recital that unveiled his irrefutable and oh so personal sense of construction, combined with a narrative power as rare as it is spellbinding, thus confirming his place at the apex among the most striking pianists of the new generation. © Artalinna

In Chopin Late piano works Edoardo Torbianelli matches once again the poetry of his pianism with the rigour of his scholarly investigations into the music he plays. Together with the booklet essay-writer, Jeanne Roudet, Torbianelli has considered afresh the music written by Frédéric Chopin in the last fifteen years of the Polish composer’s life. To follow on from his Pian e forte collection, Torbianelli has recorded at Fondation Royaumont in France – playing on an 1842 Ignace Pleyel grand piano – Chopin’s A flat Polonaise-Fantaisie, Op 61, the B minor Sonata Op. 58 and a selection of Mazurkas and Nocturnes for this new Schola Cantorum Basiliensis release presented by Glossa. With this programme Edoardo Torbianelli is situating the compositional approach more directly within Chopin’s Polish heritage; though he later went into exile the composer was present in Warsaw until just before the November Uprising in 1830. Unlike Berlioz and Liszt, it is argued, Chopin eschewed literature as direct inspiration and – again unlike Liszt – the Polish composer’s piano music shares similarities in technique and performative style with the bel canto school of singing, the descendant of the art of eighteenth-century castrati and perpetuated in the 1800s by Italian singers as heard by Chopin himself in Paris. The resulting “vocality” of Chopin’s piano music finds echo in Edoardo Torbianelli’s interpretations for a recording which can be considered both for its fresh approach but also as a masterly reflection of the composer’s genius. © Glossa

Sophisticated colourist and cerebral virtuoso though he is, Nelson Goerner nevertheless brings out the moments of weakness, the hesitations, the lightning passions in the labyrinth of Chopin’, wrote Diapason on the release of the Preludes in 2015 (Diapason d’Or, Choc de Classica). ‘Serenity’, ‘balance’, ‘clarity’, ‘phrasing’ are the key words that recur in reviews of the discs and concerts of the Argentine pianist, whose fifth solo release on Alpha this is. His latest venture is a complete recording of the Nocturnes, a highpoint of Chopinesque poetry. These twenty-one miniatures accompanied Chopin over a good part of his life, for he composed them between 1827 and 1848. They are tributes to Italian bel canto, expressing reveries but also complexity of feeling and a profundity that far transcends their apparent simplicity. Nelson Goerner’s feeling for melody and tempo works wonders in these pieces, which he recorded in the ideal surroundings of the Salle de Musique of La Chaux de Fonds (Switzerland). © Alpha
