In an important moment, the great interpreter of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies for Eternal Records (the ethereal symphonies nos. 4 and 7 in Dresden during the seventies, the subtle Symphony No. 6 in San Francisco with Decca, all those with Gewandhaus during his years with Querstand), Herbert Blomstedt returns to head the Bamberger Symphoniker with a 9th by Mahler. But there seems to be something up here. Blomstedt seems to have concentrated his efforts on all that is intrinsically ‘new’ in Mahler’s sonic universe. Blomstedt has stripped back the instrumentals, accusing some of being “ugly” or out of place. He has put emphasis on the harshness of the writing and the explosive character of the changes between string, brass and woodwind parts (Im Tempo eines gemàchlichen Ländlers); even the lyricism has gone under the knife (the central episode of Rono-Burleske). What’s going on? Where are we being taken? We are clearly at the conception of a completely new world here in which the tempos carry a feeling of moderation throughout the symphony and allow one to live, intensely, in the moment: the end of Rondo-Burleske acts as an initial cataclysm. The symphony could have come to an end here but it is followed by the enormous 20-minute-long Adagio postlude in which one asks if it could possibly get more sad or morbid. The colors dull, the tones themselves inexorably fade and the polyphonic layers die down. Emotions fly. With this 9th, recorded in June 2018 in the Joseph-Keilberth-Saal of the Bamberg Konzerthalle, Herbert Blomstedt returns to deliver true Mahler: the abstract. Love is mystical, cosmic and human. It is without hope. Bruckner’s 19th Century is blown away. Fascinating. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

The premiere of Mahler’s Third Symphony took place in June 1902 in Krefeld (not far from Düsseldorf), but it was indeed the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne which gave that first performance... greeted with acclaim – this was not always the composer’s experience with his masterpieces. Originally conceived as a hymn to Nature, in which the inert chaos of the opening movement is gradually left behind, the work calls for enormous forces (large orchestra, women’s choir, boys’ choir, and contralto soloist) and at each hearing leaves an unforgettable impression on the audience. Such was the case in October 2018, when François-Xavier Roth led the esteemed successors of the work’s first interpreters in this latest Mahler adventure. © harmonia mundi

What a pleasure it is to return to Riccardo Chailly, at the head of the Filarmonica della Scala, with a collection on Rota (1911-1979) and more particularly his songs written for the great films of Fellini such as Amarcord, Huit et Demi, and La Dolce Vita! Before him, another Riccardo, Muti, had dedicated, in the 1990s, two albums with Sony Classical to the film scores of the Italian composer – with one collection on his non-cinematographic corpus. Whether Rota’s music was for cinema or the concert hall was of little importance as he rolled out, to the likes of Bernard Herrmann in the United States, a style that was true to himself where one feels his genius and prowess for evoking ambiance mixed with an incredible dexterity for the most diverse genres, as can be heard in Suite taken here from La Dolce Vita. The beginning (O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia) of the following Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, in which the chiming of the pendulum evokes the tragic destiny of the character and the harmonization of somber colors creates a sea-like atmosphere, remains without a doubt one of the most striking tracks on the album. This ambiance returns in the final part, this time all the more mind-blowing (The Dancing Doll). Often influences from the East, of Chostakovitch and Khachaturian (Il Duca di Württenberg), can be heard along with more meridian styles inherited from Italian symphonists from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A passionate album not to be missed. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
