Alpha begins a complete cycle of the symphonies by Sibelius alongside some of his symphonic poems with Gothenburg Symphony and its new chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. In the great tradition of Finnish conductors, Santtu-Matias Rouvali is known for his extremely physical and organic interpretations: ‘Music unmistakeably flows from him’, commented The Sunday Times. This was evident when, at a very young age, he stepped in to conduct a concert with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra which began the journey to his first tenure as Chief Conductor with the Tampere Philharmonic; a meteoric rise to a career working at the highest musical level internationally; and a third post as Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. When Bachtrack asked him how he shapes the orchestral sound, he replied: ‘I sing it, I move my hands the way I want it (…) the conductor should be able to show tempo somewhere in the body (…) I was also a drum kit player, so my feet and hands can do different things at the same time. When you read the score, you sing it in your head (…) I think it’s the sense of inside groove that you get from playing percussion which is very important in Sibelius’s music.’ In the Gothenburg Symphony he finds a prestigious cohort of musicians with an impressive discography, and joins a line of their illustrious musical directors, notably Neeme Järvi, the orchestra’s principal conductor from 1982 to 2004, but also Gustavo Dudamel, who is honorary conductor. © Outhere Music

Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen Choc de Classica
The rediscovery of Stravinsky's Funeral Song, from a recording made in St Petersburg in Spring 2015, was a major event. Composed over the summer of 1908 in honour of his late teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, who died in June that year, it marked a moment where Stravinsky was working at many different types of writing, looking for a personal language. The work was first performed at a memorial concert in St Petersburg in January 1909 but thereafter it disappeared without a trace: the only evidence of its existence was in accounts of the concert and the composer's own nostalgic memories of the work he saw as "the best of my works before Firebird, and the most advanced in terms of chromatic harmonies." And here at last is the world's first ever recording of it! A stunning little treasure in which we can still hear Rimsky, and also the Stravinsky of Firebird, but perhaps also still the Stravinsky of the Rite of Spring, which was still very recent, a testimony to the composer's breakneck evolution. It was in the same year, 1908, that Stravinsky interrupted his writing of Fireworks when he heard the news of Rismsky's death in order to compose his Funeral Song; the Scherzo Fantastique was the last score by the young composer that the old master would ever get to read, although he never heard it performed. With this recording, Riccardo Chilly offers us a judicious selection of four works from the composer's youth (we also find The Faun and the Shepherdess of 1906, a little cycle of three melodies with orchestra, sung in French, here with Sophie Koch) followed by the big turning point that is the Rite of Spring, with a reading which is both clear and fiery. © SM/Qobuz

An album, a symphony: you would think that we had returned to the days of the Long Play, and the era of Mravinsky, Doráti, Markevitch, Karajan as well as many other performers and interpreters who have marked the discographic history of the last symphony from Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovsky. The album cover also seems to confirm it: it brings to mind the old RCA covers from the 50s and 60s. Sony Classical, being very supportive of the artistic endeavours of the Greco-Russian master, didn't hesitate to bring out a roughly 45-minute album - they had done better with the Rites of Spring (2015), which was feted in the press. Here, Teodor Currentzis continues his exploration of Tchaikovsky's world, with the Pathétique, putting the accent on the dynamic contrasts, sometimes naturally, sometimes by technical means (adagio lamentoso), and bringing to bear some methods that are normally specific to pop music. He exploits the sombre tone of the work, even above its rhythmic energy, and looks to create atmospheres that one could often call morbid. For record-lovers, this release is a great opportunity to revisit his discography, and for all other ardent Qobuz users it is an opportunity to rediscover this true emblem of the orchestral repertoire. © TG/Qobuz

Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen Choc de Classica
Let’s start by saying this is not a “complete” collection of Havergal Brian’s symphonies in the true sense of the word, meaning a complete collection in which all symphonies are recorded by the same orchestra, with the same conductor over a more-or-less-precise period of time. However Naxos can boast about being able to offer all thirty-two of this unique composer’s symphonies, the oldest recordings dating back twenty years and just a few months for the most recent ones. It’s also worth mentioning that several of these symphonies had never been recorded before, further highlighting the rarity of this collection. The first one, Gothic − started in 1919 and only completed in 1927 − is highly majestic, with an orchestra of 210 performers and a choir that would need to exceed 500 people to be heard over the 17 percussionists, 68 brass and 32 woodwinds of the ensemble. Lasting almost two hours in total it is one of the most imposing of the entire repertoire. Quickly however Brian had to make amends and move towards more reasonable formats, with the vast majority lasting around 20 minutes, and the shortest – the aptly named 22nd, Sinfonia brevis from 1965 – doesn’t exceed nine minutes. In this complete collection, the listener will find everything and its opposite, big surprises, others more staggering or odd, never radical, but Havergal Brian will undeniable move you, with a personal language that can’t quite be categorised, neither modern nor old, but stubbornly Havergalbrianian. In addition to his symphonies, some albums also feature concertos, overtures and isolated orchestral pieces that offer a different way to approach the work of this unique character.

Nothing new under the sun ? Oh but yes! This recording of the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies of Beethoven by the venerable Nikolaus Harnoncourt lives and breathes brand new. The difference is most notable seeing as he calls on an instrumentarium (along the lines of what Beethoven had in his time) particularly wind-based, whose sound is frankly different from what we know today. Listeners beware: you'll never listen to these two Beethoven symphonies with the same ear once you've had a taste of the original fountain that is sourced here in the 85th year of Harnoncourts wonderful musical mind © SM / Qobuz

It is the third time that Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons is invited to direct the prestigious New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, having previously done so in both 2006 and 2012. This concert, broadcast direct across the planet to about 90 million viewers, will certainly honour the Strauss dynasty: Johann father, Johann son, Josef and Eduard, but also the composer of operettas and film scores Robert Stolz (1880 - 1975), Carl Ziehrer, Emil Waldteufel and Josef Hellmesberger. The majority of waltzes and polkas by Strauss from a big part of the habitual content for the New Year's Concert supply, but eight works are really offered first. They will end unquestionably with Vienna's least kept secret, The Blue Danube Waltz and The Radetzky March. It is worth noting that this will mark the 75th anniversary of the birth of the New Years Concert in Vienna. © SM/Qobuz
