Booklet
Thirty years after his premature death, the American harpsichordist and organist Scott Ross is still present in the hearts of music lovers. His name remains attached to the marathon of 555 sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti he recorded on harpsichord for Disques Erato. It is out of this achievement that Scott Ross took on the task of recording the integrity of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works on keys (harpsichord and organ), but the great grim-reaper thought otherwise. This new homage-publication takes existing recordings and completes them with hitherto unseen material from French, Swiss and Canadian radios, including concerts and recordings on both harpsichord and organ. This disparate ensemble finds its coherence through the remastering of a wide range of sources by Christophe Hénault from Studio Art & Son. The happiness of experiencing the intense, fantastic and colourful joy of Scott Ross again will satisfy numerous admirers who will find him in solo, but also in duet with his old teacher Huguette Grémy-Chauliac and the Mosaïques ensemble under the direction of Christophe Coin. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Alpha is reissuing the complete Beethoven quartets by the Belcea Quartet : 'Beethoven's music has been at the center of our life as a quartet from our very first rehearsal together back in 1994. However, it is more recently that we immersed ourselves totally in Beethoven in preparation for, and during the course of the immense project of performing and recording all of his string quartets in the season 2011/12. It is during this past year that Beethoven's music became an all-consuming passion for each of us. These sixteen quartets written some two hundred years ago form one the most complete and powerful musical statements ever made. The completeness lies in their unprecedented intensity and in the astonishing development that can be traced between the early and the late works - a thirty-year long revolution which altered forever the way we experience music.' © Alpha Classics

Booklet
His life accidentally cut short days before his thirty-sixth birthday, the tenor Fritz Wunderlich is cemented in memory as an incomparable interpreter of Mozart and Schubert. In a dazzling manner, this album shows how incomplete Wunderlich’s reputation is and how, since his early days, he was an extraordinary interpreter of the music of his time. Recorded by the south German radios between 1956 and 1960, the works presented here originate from a group of musicians that were ignored and reviled by the Nazi regime but remained present in the country against all odds.Such is the case of Günter Raphael, the choirmaster and organist at St. Thomas Leipzig, who lost his job in 1934 after being classed “half-Jew” by the authorities. Well-liked in the post-war GDR, he possessed a distinct sense of humor shown in Sonate Palmström in which he musicalized the absurd poems of Christian Morgenstern and combined a variety of elements such as jazz, pop music and cabaret. A pioneer in Germany of baroque music played on period instruments, Fritz Neumeyer composed for his friend Wunderlich a delectable neo-classical suite of Studentenlieder (“Student Songs”) based on humorous texts from the 17th Century that the tenor interprets with his usual enthusiasm. This passionate publication also provides extracts of operas and sung lieders as well as the diverse ensembles of Dietrich von Bausznern, a friend and classmate of Fritz Wunderlich, Everett Helm, Heinrich Feischner, Hans Pfitzner, Hermann Reutter, Alban Bery (Wozzeck) and Carl Orff, to which the editors have added an air of Stavinski’s oratorio Oedopus Rex. These superbly restored recordings offer a dive into a mysterious, post-war German universe while presenting another side of an artist we thought we already knew well. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Booklet
“An organ for Michelangelo” allegedly exclaimed Charles-Marie Widor upon seeing for the first time the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Church of St. Ouen in Rouen, completed in 1890 and which has remained in pristine condition to this day. The famous organ builder had in fact integrated in his piece older elements from a Crespin Carlier organ from 1630, thus creating an instrument with wide-ranging sounds, from baroque to late romanticism. And Widor’s Organ Symphony No.9, Op. 70 “Gothique” is dedicated to this very organ! Here, this monumental work is played on the masterpiece that inspired it, a touching return to the original sound sources. In addition to the Ninth, this collection also features the Fifth and its final Toccata which is without a doubt the most famous moment in all of Widor’s work, as well as the Sixth, also made up of five movements, both characterised by their symphonic radiance. The Eighth, the Ninth and the Tenth end Widor’s cycle of ten symphonies for organ, which he wrote between 1887 and 1900 before turning his attention to other musical genres. All the while, he pursued his immense career as an international soloist until the end of his long life, as well as his vocation as a teacher, counting among his students the likes of Louis Vierne, Albert Schweitzer, Charles Tournemire and Marcel Dupré, and as a composition professor for Arthur Honegger, Edgar Varèse and Darius Milhaud. His style bears the clear influence of César Franck, whom he succeeded at the Conservatoire de Paris, and to a lesser extent of Saint-Saëns, for whom he worked as an assistant during his studies. The Cavaillé-Coll in Rouen is truly one of the most extraordinary instruments of its time; and Widor’s music is perfectly tailored for its thousand facets. © SM/Qobuz

In Rossini’s Petite Messe sollenelle (1863-1867), sacred tones blend in seamlessly with allusions to his comic operas. “Is this sacred music which I have written or music of the devil?”, the composer tellingly asked himself in a personal letter. Rossini’s enigmatic but highly enjoyable mass demonstrates his rich musical palette, ranging from “archaic” remnants of Bach, Haydn and Mozart to harmonic audacities that point towards the music of Fauré and even Poulenc. Despite this stylistic range, the Petite Messe sollenelle sounds unmistakably Rossinian, and continues to enchant audiences to this day. Initially composed for a small ensemble of singers accompanied by two pianos and a harmonium, the piece is presented here in Rossini’s orchestration. © Pentatone
