With Cupid’s assistance, the sculptor Pygmalion brings his beloved creation to life. This recording treats us to two versions of the celebrated story. Jean-Philippe Rameau’s familiar oneact opera Pigmalion, in which the deus ex machina fulfils Pygmalion’s desires, is followed by Georg Benda’s little-known gem of the same name: a gripping monodrama for spoken voice and orchestra in which we can imagine the sculptor undergoing an inner conflict between desire and reality. Rising star Korneel Bernolet conducts his Apotheosis Orchestra and a group of young vocal partners: the Canadian haute-contre Philippe Gagné sings the passionate Pigmalion in Rameau’s opéra-ballet, alongside Lieselot De Wilde as his wife Céphise and Caroline Weynants as the divine Amour. Morgane Heyse performs the role of the enchanted Statue in both versions. German bass-baritone Norman D. Patzke makes his debut as voice actor for Benda’s monodrama. © Ramée/Outhere

Jean-Luc Votano, principal clarinet of the Liège Royal Philharmonic (OPRL), here presents a work by a ‘classic’ figure of the twentieth century, the Kammerkonzert for clarinet, string quartet and string orchestra of Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1930), along with two compositions of the twenty-first: Magnus Lindberg’s Clarinet Concerto, of which Votano gave the Belgian premiere with the OPRL, and Fantasme - Cercles de Mana by Johan Farjot. The latter work, scored for clarinet, viola, cello and orchestra, here receives its world premiere before being performed to a concert hall audience. An album that admirably reflects the virtuosity and musicality of one of the OPRL’s principal soloists. © Fuga Libera/Outhere

During his lifetime, Viennese violinist and composer Joseph Mayseder received numerous awards, including his appointment as Imperial Chamber Virtuoso in 1835, his becoming named a honorary member of the Pesth-Ofener Musikverein, Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Styrian Musikverein in 1839, in 1852 of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and in 1862 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order. Nevertheless Mayseder is today considered an insider tip, his works are continually being published as world premiere recordings by violinist Raimund Lissy, member of the Vienna Philharmonic. Volume 5 of this series contains the Great Concert Piece No. 1, the Variations Op. 25 and Op. 40, the Potpurri-Variations Op. 27, the Polonaise No. 3 and the Duo Op. 31. Raimund Lissy is joined by the ensemble Violissimo consisting of Thomas Christian and Lara resp. Luka Kusztrich, violins, Robert Bauerstatter, Viola and Susanne Lehner, cello. © Gramola

Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812–65) was one of the leading musicians of his day, a friend of Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn, and for Joseph Joachim ‘the greatest violinist I ever heard’. But the popular encore pieces by which Ernst is remembered today represent only a fraction of his output. This fifth volume – in series of seven presenting all his compositions for the first time – shows his mastery of large- and small-scale forms: the Polonaise de Concert and Variations on the National Anthem are grand and brilliant compositions for the concert hall, while the sparkling operatic miniatures and tender arrangements are altogether more intimate. © Toccata Classics
