"… O sink hernieder, Nacht der Liebe" That motif from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde sets the musical and lyrical mood for the selection of pieces and poems in the Feininger Trio’s programme, performed for the first time at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival. Love and death: The goal in selecting the poems was to find a mood similar to Schubert’s Notturno and Chopin’s Piano Trio Op. 8: texts that could establish a lyrical dialogue with those pieces. How can we grasp the great subject of love and death? How can we associate language with music, but without relegating language to a subordinate role? How can a series of poems tell their own story while at the same time highlighting the expression conveyed by the music, which is still the precondition for this musical-poetical programme? Start at the beginning: Following Schubert’s Adagio (later renamed Notturno), the theme of love is addressed in Ingeborg Bachmann’s poem Erklär mir Liebe and in Rilke’s Liebes-Lied,which features metaphors associated with string music. "Allegro con fuoco" is the tempo marking of the first movement in Chopin’s Piano Trio, Op. 8. As if the poem had been listening to the music, it starts out with a “Fortissimo”, the title of Elke Lasker-Schuler’s poem Du spieltest ein ungestümes Lied. © CAvi-Music

Here’s a remarkable recording showcasing a little known aspect of Brahms’ genius: his sacred choral music. As a choirmaster in Detmold, Hamburg and Vienna, he left behind an enormous amount of choral works, both sacred and secular. Composed based on extracts from Hölderlin’s famous epistolary novel Hyperion, the Song of Destiny (Schicksalslied) opens this splendid album with an atmosphere reminiscent of A German Requiem. The first two verses picked by Brahms invoke the carefree and peaceful world of Ancient Gods, while the third ends with a dramatic illustration of human destiny. This contrast is a recurring theme throughout Brahms’ literary choices, and makes up the backbone of this recording.Conducted with great suppleness and inwardness by Gijs Leenaars, the works featured in this great album evoke Ancient Greece, a leitmotiv of German romanticism, as well as a form of angst towards life, with unanswered existential questions regarding suffering and pain inflicted by an all-powerful God. This programme alternates between works for a cappella choirs (the excellent Berlin Radio Choir showing an exceptional range of nuances) and others intended for orchestras (Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin). © François Hudry/Qobuz

We are standing in a picture gallery of music. All around us we can hear snippets of the great works for string quartets, along with unfamiliar things to delight the ear; it is truly a music-lover’s paradise. "Chiaroscuro" forms the conclusion of a rather special trilogy of albums by the Schumann Quartet and at the same time marks a journey’s end. After the quartet searched their own roots with their first album "Landscapes" and engaged with their namesake Robert Schumann on the follow-up album "Intermezzo", they are now completing their journey with the new album "Chiaroscuro". As of today there is a second foretaste of the upcoming album: Shostakovich's "Elegy" from string quartet 15. The piece can be heard from today on all common platforms. © Berlin Classics

The season of 2012-2013 represented a mini-revolution in the long history of the Dresden Staatskapelle, the oldest orchestra in the world founded in 1548 by Maurice, Elector of Saxony. In fact, it was the first time that the venerable institution had named a “principal guest conductor” (also a world-first in orchestra) in the Korean, Myung-Whun Chung. The nomination coincided with that of its new director, the German conductor Christian Thielemann. Loved by them after his first appearance behind the music stand in 2001, Chung developed a close relationship with the German orchestra during symphonic concerts and in the orchestral pit of the Semper Opera where he directed a largely impactful series dedicated to Verdi’s Don Carlos. He also led the orchestra on a tour around Europe, the United States and Asia.In addition to his artistic activities, Myung-Whun Chung is dedicated to humanitarian and environmental causes. He was ambassador for a United Nations program for the control of drugs (PNUCID) and was named “man of the year” by UNESCO in 1995. In 1996, he won the Kumkuan, the highest artistic award in South Korea. He was also named the first honorary cultural ambassador for his country. In 2008, he became the first conductor named an Itinerant Ambassador. A message of brotherhood is what Myung-Whun Chung evokes in his interpretation of the Symphony “Eroica”, recorded during the two season concerts in 2004. Beyond his Classicism, his measured tempos and attention to detail, there is a vision rife with greatness and captivating enthusiasm. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Fazil Say is not merely a pianist. This phenomenal Turkish musician is also a hugely talented composer, combining traditional eastern Mediterranean music with jazz, a structural rigour worthy of Haydn or Mozart and an orchestration reminiscent of Stravinsky or Ravel, all the while ensuring that his music is wonderfully original. His repertoire comprises some seventy works, ranging from symphonies to pieces for solo piano, chamber music to concertos and film music to “classical” jazz. Among other things, this album features two world premieres: the colourful Grand Bazaar written for orchestra and first performed in 2015, and China Rhapsody written for piano and orchestra, which premiered in 2016. The two works show that Say is not afraid to branch out. In the first part of the program, we find “Concerto for Violin 1001 Nights in the Harem” from 2007, a work that glitters with the decorative Arab palaces, orchestral flourishes à la Ravel, and the sensual sweatiness from those thousand and one nights in question... Howard Griffith, a conductor who has worked with many of the main Turkish composers, is in his element here with the Austrian Radio Orchestra; for the concerto we find Iskandar Widjaja, the spectacular violinist of German and Indonesian origin, quite rightly considered a cross between a popstar and a high-flying international soloist - a worthy successor, say, to Nigel Kennedy. © SM/Qobuz

The Ultrecht Te Deum, composed in 1713 to celebrate the coming of peace after the War of the Spanish Succession, marked Handel’s thunderous beginnings in London. The three works presented on this album by the Gächinger Cantorey under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann all date incidentally to the same time that saw the definitive establishment of the German composer in the English capital. He would very soon take on the status of “national musician” and, following official orders, dedicated himself as much to the Church as to opera. Created with immense success in Saint-Paul’s Cathedral in London, Ultrecht Te Deum and Jubilate displayed a very deft synthesis of genres and paid homage to Purcell while avoiding overly noticeable Italianism. Handel’s art achieved great lyrical expression through pared-down means without being too ostentatious. At a concert given to the Stuttgart Liederhalle, the Te Deum was preceded by the sequel to Il Pastor fido (The Faithful Herdsman), a pastoral opera that the composer brought along with him to England. Within months, Handel became the composer for the Crown and composed an Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, the first of his numerous official scores that set about his musical genius just before the composition of the spectacular Te Deum. © François Hudry/Qobuz

John Knowles Paine was the first American-born composer to earn widespread recognition for his larger-scale symphonic works. But his smaller-scale compositions—in particular his beautifully crafted piano pieces—have been largely forgotten. With this album’s lovely and wondrously performed music, the acclaimed pianist Christopher Atzinger seeks to redress such unjustified neglect. Being the eldest of the fabled “Boston Six” band of composers, Paine was also the first to receive advanced training in Europe. Some have called him the finest American composer of his time. And, as the nation’s first American-born music professor, the curriculum he developed at Harvard was adopted by academic music departments across the country and has profoundly influenced advanced American musical training ever since. © Delos Music
