“From song to symphony, from the Bim-Bom theatre to radio orchestral recordings, from theatre music to performances at the "Warsaw Autumn" International Festival of Contemporary Music. Indeed, it was a career "on its own note", as the subtitle of Edward Pałłasz’s (1936–2019) memoirs says. Surprisingly, the memoirs are devoid of regret that the creator of the Symphony "1976" was not allowed to complete his studies in composition, despite having studying music at lower levels. The road to a genuine success was complicated, winding and full of adventures and discoveries; moreover, the composer’s style that emerged on that journey was free from temporary trends or ideological obligations. The present album includes a number of works that perfectly illustrate the ease with which Edward Pałłasz employed various types of compositional techniques related to the choral music. © DUX Records

Around 1490, the painter Hans Memling created his "Concert of Angels". It consists of three paintings for the outside of an altar and shows God the Father surrounded by angels singing and playing instruments. What might the music have sounded like that inspired Memling to this painting? Very precisely, the painter depicted the instruments of his time, grouped into the "alta" and "bassa capella" typical of the period - the loud and the quiet instruments. Together with the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, where Memling's paintings hang today, Wim Beku initiated an interdisciplinary project in which the depicted instruments were recreated in detail by specialists in instrument making and research was carried out to find thematically appropriate music. The central theme of the original altar, of which only the Angel Concerto remains, was the Assumption of Mary, and so "Paradisi porte" – the door to paradise – also determines the music of this album. Gregorian music from liturgical books and polyphonic compositions from the time around 1500 in Bruges are heard, truly heavenly music played by Wim Becus "Otremontano Antwerpen" together with the singers of the Tiburtina Ensemble. © Accent

Mayr’s Masses were in demand across Europe, and their composition is rooted in the Italian tradition of the "messa concertata" which demands division into separate vocal numbers. The Mass in E minor has long been recognised as an outstanding example of Mayr’s late style, with its polyphonic mastery and dialogues between singers and concertante solo instruments being exceptionally convincing. The Mass in F minor evokes both joy and deep melancholy, though accompanied, as always, by Mayr’s notable gift for melodic beauty. © Naxos

Instrumental Ensemble of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdansk Slawomir Stanislaw Czarnecki was born in 1949 in Jelenia Góra. In 1963–1969, he attended the State Music School in Czestochowa as a piano class student. It was also there where he took contact with Prof. Romuald Twardowski, with whom he had his first composition lessons. In 1969–1974, he studied composition at the Warsaw Higher State School of Music (currently the Chopin University of Music) in the class of Prof. Piotr Perkowski and Prof. Romuald Twardowski. Vesperæ in exaltatione Sanctæ Crucis ("Vespers for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross") by Slawomir Czarnecki is a composition that is thoroughly imbued with the Christian tradition. It is almost a complete form of the evening breviary prayer of the Catholic Church written in Latin but already according to the post-conciliar liturgy. The present album features a complete recording of the said work, dedicated to His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. © DUX Records

This recording is a rarity in the field of contemporary music: a powerful statement dictated by the desire of being heard. "Nostra Culpa" is a three-part recording project named after Birman-Diel’s eponymous, and much talked-about, "Twitter Opera" and exemplifies conductor Nils Schweckendiek and the Helsinki Chamber Choir’s immersive engagement with the repertoire. A feat of sound engineering and performance prowess, "Nostra Culpa" also sanctions the emergence in the international scene of a major compositional talent. The Helsinki Chamber Choir was founded in 1962 as the Finnish Radio Chamber Choir and assumed its current name in 2005. Currently Finland’s only professional chamber choir, its wide-ranging repertoire includes music from the Renaissance to the present day and it is particularly highly regarded for its work with new music. The choir appears frequently at festivals in Finland and abroad and collaborates with symphony orchestras, period-instrument ensembles and contemporary music groups. Its concerts are regularly broadcast on national radio and television, and it has also appeared in productions for the ARTE channel and the European Broadcasting Union. Recent touring has taken the Helsinki Chamber Choir to the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia and around Scandinavia. The choir is a member of Tenso, the European network of professional chamber choirs. © Alba Records
