After winning the First Prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho (born in 1994) embarked on a bright global career that has already taken him absolutely everywhere! Following his first three albums, with two devoted to Chopin (obviously…), a third to Debussy (slightly more unusual), he now dives into Mozart, in particular the Concerto in D minor that has already earned him a Third Prize at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition. In fact, the pianist explains how Mozart was his favourite as a child, and proves it with great finesse in this recording. In accompanied Yannick Nézet-Séguin – a master at accompaniment for opera and concerts – Cho has found an excellent partner. It is worth noting the pianist has opted for the cadences composed by Beethoven. His album also features two Mozart sonatas, both in major keys strongly contrasting with the dark and theatrical concerto. Once again the pianist puts emphasis on clarity and the sung line, rather than sheer virtuosity – however, virtuosity is still apparent despite Mozart’s sonatas not exactly being monsters of fingering mechanics. The album ends withFantasia No. 3 in D minor, one of his most famous pieces even though it is only a fragment of a movement (it was either unfinished or the ending was lost). The ten concluding measures were added by an editor. © SM/Qobuz

Competition between composers was fierce and ruthless in the princely courts of 18th century Europe, and Mozart was just one of many. This new album from Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko serves as the perfect reminder of this, dedicated to Mozart’s famous arias (The Abduction from the Seraglio, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and The Clemency of Titus) but also including works by Traetta, Martín y Soler and Paisiello, which are equally as masterful. The three excerpts from Tommaso Traetta’s Antigone which derived from Neapolitan opera and was composed for the court of Catherine II of Russia, are a testament to the passion that motivated composers from this period. His melodic phrases are full of tenderness and affliction and they certainly did not go unnoticed by the young Mozart. Paisiello and Martín y Soler were also both very successful in their time and completely eclipsed Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro, which only really gained popularity in Prague and was the reason why he was asked by the Czech capital to compose Don Giovanni. Even if Mozart’s contemporaries were tough on him, his unique genius has been recognised overtime and his extraordinary legacy has overshadowed all those of other great composers from his time. This album provides an enthralling replica of his music, featuring top-class performer Olga Peretyatko alongside the Basel Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ivor Bolton. © François Hudry/Qobuz

"Piano Book" is a compilation of post-Bach piano music’s greatest hits. Lang Lang puts together a retrospective anthology beginning with J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier. The piece, in fully written arpeggio, which every piano student has studied to practice fingering, articulations, and harmonic tiering is followed by Beethoven’s Lettre à Elise. Lang Lang then invites Mendelssohn (La Fileuse), Chopin (15th Prelude from Opus 28), and Mozart (Allegro from Sonata "Semplice" or Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman") The record also includes lesser-known repertoire from such composers as Badarzewska-Baranowska, Czerny, or Clementi and a few Chinese classic and traditional / popular songs from diverse parts of the world.Lang Lang has fun, especially when he plays French music. Performing Debussy’s Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum, he enjoys each afterbeat, plays with the basses, and even sings. © Qobuz

The mysterious virtuoso and world-renowned soloist and recitalist Evgeny Kissin doesn’t often venture into the realm of chamber music. The Emerson Quartet were therefore presented with a unique opportunity when they were offered to do an eight-concert tour of Germany and the United States with the famous pianist. For this album, Deutsche Grammophon decided to record their last performance together at Carnegie Hall in New York on April 27, 2018 and after much deliberation the decision was finally made to perform two major pieces in a minor key. The first is Mozart’s famous Quartet in G minor, and for the second we delve into the world of romanticism with just a hint of nostalgia with the young Gabriel Fauré’s Quartet in C minor. The concert ends with Dvořák’s light-hearted and joyful Quintet in A major, with its undertones of Czech folklore. No musician tried to steal the show as the collective priority seemed to be performing these masterpieces classically. The musicians work together humbly and cooperatively in an intimate atmosphere that feels more like they’re in a living room than a legendary concert hall. © François Hudry/Qobuz

A is for “Amadeus,” and a recording which marks a return to the source for Quatuor Zaïde, who dedicate their fourth collection to the genius Austrian composer. Z is for Zaïde, a “Singspiel” by Mozart in the style of Die Zauberflöte, which historical transcription for string quartet is a world premiere! Paired with the Quartet in G Major, No. 14, K. 387, this miniature version of one of the most famous operas repeatedly casts each instrument of the quartet in a multitude of lyric roles, celebrating the eternal dialogue between singing and playing. © Nomadmusic

In this – their second album with Coviello Classics – the Atéa Wind Quintet pairs William Alwyn’s unique and luscious Concerto for flute and eight instruments with Quentin Poole’s arrangement of Mozart’s Sonata for Four Hands (KV497). Wiliam Alwyn’s Concerto for Flute and eight wind instruments brings a burst of sound and busy intertwining lines, showcasing the many styles of music he wrote over his lifetime; from orchestral symphonies, to film scores, to operas and concertos. According to the composer: “It came (to me) like recollections of joy once experienced. I just wanted to write a piece of musical beauty”. Alwyn relished dissonance, which adds to the drama of this concerto, with the unusual orchestration of all wind instruments. This unusual instrumentation is expertly paired with Quentin Poole’s fine arrangement of Mozart’s Piano Sonata for Four Hands (KV497) in F Major. An oboist and former boy chorister himself, Quentin expertly uses the different colours of the wind nonet to achieve a rich symphonic blend, whilst also showcasing each instrument in key moments to highlight Mozart’s delicate passages passed across the group. © Coviello Classics
