We’re absolutely delighted to present a solo performance by one of Germany’s most fascinating pianists, Herbert Schuch, who after producing two albums with his wife Gülru Ensari for CAvi-Music, returns to the Cologne label to work on his own ambitious projects. Recorded in Studio 2 of the Bayerischer Rundfunk in December 2017, here’s at last his newest solo project, following his 2014 Naive album (Invocation − the relationship with the French firm was terminated when Naive’s art director joined Belgian label Outhere, and the group Believe took over Naive) and his seven albums produced for Oehms Classics before 2013.Herbert Schuch had seldom explored Beethoven until this album, in which he opposes Beethoven’s Eleven Bagatelles, Op. 119 to György Ligeti’s Musica Ricercata eleven miniatures, topping it off with the Bonn Master’s Op. 126. Unlike the Bagatelles’ last opus, Op. 119 isn’t necessarily designed as a cycle, meaning it makes perfect sense to weave together these Beethovenian thoughts with those of the greatest piano composer of the second half of the 20th century. With these powerful piano harmonics, supported by a brilliant sound recording that would lend itself marvellously to Olivier Messiaen’s music or the tenants of spectral music, the various characters explored by Ligeti in his Musica Ricercata directly impact Beethoven’s accents − the Bonn Master not necessarily being the most expansive of the two in this case.A slightly unsettling, yet undeniably intentional proposition. None should pass on the chance to experience the newest album of one of the piano scene’s smartest musicians, particularly as Musica Ricercata recordings remain a rarity. The Op. 126’s sculptural nature is most impressive. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

The Calder Quartet invites you on a journey from early to late Beethoven, passing through an exciting contemporary piece by Swedish composer Anders Hillborg along the way. Beethoven’s Op. 131 string quartet, that concludes this album, is already a great adventure in its own right, with its seven movements full of fugal writing, harmonic explorations, variations and passages filled with operatic drama. Hearing this late masterpiece together with the much more classical, but equally lively, Op. 18 no. 3 quartet opens our ears to the exceptional richness of Beethoven’s musical universe. Hillborg’s Kongsgaard Variations reveals unexpected sonic relationships to Beethoven’s variation technique, underlining the modernity of the older composer. This all leads to a program that is lively, layered and ravishingly beautiful. Hailed as one of the most exciting classical music groups of the United States, the Calder Quartet now presents the first fruit of its exclusive collaboration with Pentatone. © Pentatone

After "Inventions", "Revelations" is the second volume in a complete set of the Beethoven quartets that breaks new ground: it aims to regroup the works according to their position within the three broad creative divisions of the composers life the formative years, the heroic period and the late period. "Piano Book" is a compilation of post-Bach piano music’s greatest hits. Lang Lang puts together a retrospective anthology beginning with J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier. The piece, in fully written arpeggio, which every piano student has studied to practice fingering, articulations, and harmonic tiering is followed by Beethoven’s Lettre à Elise. Lang Lang then invites Mendelssohn (La Fileuse), Chopin (15th Prelude from Opus 28), and Mozart (Allegro from Sonata "Semplice" or Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman") The record also includes lesser-known repertoire from such composers as Badarzewska-Baranowska, Czerny, or Clementi and a few Chinese classic and traditional / popular songs from diverse parts of the world.Lang Lang has fun, especially when he plays French music. Performing Debussy’s Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum, he enjoys each afterbeat, plays with the basses, and even sings. © Qobuz

After winning the First Prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho (born in 1994) embarked on a bright global career that has already taken him absolutely everywhere! Following his first three albums, with two devoted to Chopin (obviously…), a third to Debussy (slightly more unusual), he now dives into Mozart, in particular the Concerto in D minor that has already earned him a Third Prize at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition. In fact, the pianist explains how Mozart was his favourite as a child, and proves it with great finesse in this recording. In accompanied Yannick Nézet-Séguin – a master at accompaniment for opera and concerts – Cho has found an excellent partner. It is worth noting the pianist has opted for the cadences composed by Beethoven. His album also features two Mozart sonatas, both in major keys strongly contrasting with the dark and theatrical concerto. Once again the pianist puts emphasis on clarity and the sung line, rather than sheer virtuosity – however, virtuosity is still apparent despite Mozart’s sonatas not exactly being monsters of fingering mechanics. The album ends withFantasia No. 3 in D minor, one of his most famous pieces even though it is only a fragment of a movement (it was either unfinished or the ending was lost). The ten concluding measures were added by an editor. © SM/Qobuz

Regarded as one of the finest interpreters of classical and romantic repertoire, Imogen Cooper is internationally renowned for her virtuosity and lyricism. This recording is her sixth release on Chandos Records, following earlier discs of works by Liszt, Wagner, Brahms, Chopin, and Robert and Clara Schumann. Imogen Cooper writes: ‘Beethoven’s "Diabelli Variations" are rightly considered to be among the greatest works for solo piano ever composed, by Beethoven or anyone else. It is incontrovertible that there is not one superfluous note in this huge masterpiece – each variation is flawless in construction and imagination, and in depth of characterisation. The breadth of ideas is limitless. Each variation tells a whole story, and for all that some are connected in mood, it is no mean feat as a performer to respect the huge scope of Beethoven’s vision.’ Imogen Cooper plays a Steinway Model D, and was recorded in the concert Hall at Snape Maltings, Suffolk. © Chandos

LSO Live celebrates the 90th birthday of one of the conducting world’s greats, Bernard Haitink. Few artists have a deeper understanding of the music of Beethoven than the celebrated Dutch conductor, who is known for his mastery of the great symphonic repertoire. This album focuses on Haitink's interpretations of Beethoven's concerto writing, coupling a new recording of Piano Concerto No 2 by Maria João Pires with a virtuosic performance of the Triple Concerto by Lars Vogt, Gordan Nikolitch and Tim Hugh, which was originally made alongside Haitink's now iconic cycle of the composer's complete symphonies. © LSO Live

Opus 18 needs little introduction and is often revered as demonstrating Beethoven’s total mastery of the Classical String Quartet. The Eybler Quartet completes its exploration of these iconic quartets in an album that showcases radiantly Beethoven’s fiendishly difficult tempi and his genius for finding contrast within a single pulse as well as highlighting the depths of his humour, wit and irony. This second volume features the String Quartets nos. 4-6. The Eybler Quartet came together in 2004 to explore the works of the first century -and-a-half of the string quartet and plays on instruments appropriate to the period of the music it performs. The Toronto-based ensemble’s live performances have consistently garnered praise as “glowing and committed”, “spirited” and “lively and energizing”. The Eybler Quartet harnesses a unique combination of talents and skills: razor-sharp ensemble skills, technical prowess, expertise in period instrument performance and an unquenchable passion for the repertoire. © Coro
