After the double album of the Violin and Harpsichord Sonatas with Kristian Bezuidenhout, here is the next instalment in a Bach recording adventure that began nine years ago with a set of the Sonatas and Partitas. Isabelle Faust, Bernhard Forck and his partners at the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin have explored a multitude of other works by Bach: harpsichord concertos, trio sonatas for organ, instrumental movements from sacred cantatas etc. All are revealed here as direct or indirect relatives of the three monumental Concertos BWV 1041-43. This fascinating achievement is a timely reminder that the master of The Well-Tempered Clavier was also a virtuoso violinist! © harmonia mundi

During the course of a full career, which justly earned him the name of "prince of baroque violinists", Giuliano Carmignola developed a remarkable vision of Bach's works for solo violin. Carmignola, a student of Szeryng and Milstein, knows this repertoire inside and out, creating a feeling of spontaneity and improvisation while remaining closely faithful to Bach's writing. He uses a discreet but present vibrato beautifully (a far cry from some other baroque musicians who step much further back from the material), and he favours a free approach to rhythm and an expressive style that highlights all the colours and subtleties of Bach's phrasing. His playing is influenced by the historical techniques unearthed by modern musicology, but it is also profoundly original, lyrical, and moving. The three Sonatas and three Partitas date back to the 1720s, the era of the great instrumental masterworks known as the Brandeburg Concertos, the First Book of the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Cello Suites. The sonatas take the form of church sonatas – four movements, slow-fast-slow-fast – and the partitas borrow from the old-style dance suites in five, six or even eight movements. © SM/Qobuz

Fans of the British crown’s splendour will certainly marvel at this double album that reproduces the coronation anthems of the four monarchs of the 20th century: Edward VII in 1902, George V in 1911, George VI in 1937, and current Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Very few of today’s ceremonies can reach such levels of grandeur. At the crossroads of tradition and innovation, these coronation ceremonies are characterised by the evocation of past heritage works, and the addition of numerous pieces commissioned specifically for the occasion to the best composers in the kingdom. For such events, Westminster Abbey is closed for several months to allow an army of craftsmen to build monumental galleries capable of hosting up to eight thousand guests. Then come the rehearsals with 400-singer choirs, half of them children, an immense orchestra, and the indispensable great organ. This recording is a selection of the best moments of these ceremonies, presented as a single liturgical structure. This ample reconstitution led by Paul McCreesh follows for the most part the 1937 ceremony, dropping however the era’s typical style when interpreting Handel. The musical approach has changed so much that it is presented here in the “baroque” style characteristic of our early 21st century. Some difficult choices were made, particularly regarding the Te Deum, the centrepiece and climax of the ceremony. A Cornelian choice between the ones from Stanford (1902), Parry (1911), Vaughan Williams (1937) and William Walton (1953). The latter was finally chosen, for its radiance and theatrical impetus. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Religieuze cantates - Verschenen op 14 juni 2019 | Ricercar

Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen 5 de Diapason - Gramophone Editor's Choice
After having explored the remaining cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach’s ancestors, Vox Luminis and Lionel Meunier have undertaken here a recording, accompanied by instrumentals, of these sacred vocal compositions. They are pieces that connect us to the principles of the “spiritual concert” (Geistliches Konzert) and that, through their multi-parted structure, belong to the origins of the sacred genre of the cantata. It was through Johann Sebastian himself that we owe the knowledge of his musical ancestors. Around the age of fifty, he felt the need to collate and retrace his family tree, most likely originating from Hungary where the miller Vitus Bach always brought a cittern with him on his way to grinding wheat. The works of the Bach family presented here represent the first of the sacred German cantatas along with those of Bruhns, Buxtehude and Pachelbel. We can hear here the predecessors’ works that led to one of the first similar works by Johann Sebastian, his cantata “Christ lag in Todesbanden BWV 4”, was considered for a long time as one of the first compositions of its genre. In addition to its striking likeness to the form of cantata eponymous to Pachelbel, this composition contains numerous elements which can notably be traced back to the works of his ancestors. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Two years after releasing her CD dedicated to Book I of J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Céline Frisch now presents the second volume of this musical landmark. Bach compiled Book II in 1744, twenty-two years after Book I. It took until 1801 for both volumes to be printed: from then until the present day they have inspired countless composers. After a series of recordings with the Ensemble Zimmermann she helped to found, Céline Frisch returns to the harpsichord recital, for a programme of this, her very favourite music. Through these preludes and fugues, she reminds us that far from being technical exercises, the Well- Tempered Clavier is a work of pure pleasure and constant renewed discovery. As Robert Schumann declared: ‘You should frequently play the fugues of the great masters, particularly those of J.S. Bach. Make the Well-Tempered Clavier your daily bread.’ © Alpha Classics

On her first Pentatone album, pianist Tamara Stefanovich presents a highly personal selection of solo works by Bach, Bartók, Ives and Messiaen. Influences shows how these extraordinarily original and idiosyncratic composers let themselves be inspired by the exterior world, thereby demonstrating how authenticity comes from looking outside as well as inside. The repertoire spans from Bach’s embrace of Italian musical elements in his Aria variata alla maniera italiana, Bartók’s incorporation of folk elements in his Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, and Messiaen’s use of Hindu rhythms in Cantéyodjayâ to the collage of marching bands, sounds of trains and machinery, church hymns, ragtime and blues in Ives’ First Piano Sonata. In all cases, the exterior influences lead to deeply original and personal sonic galaxies. In that respect, the pieces presented here underline how identity results from a constant dialogue with our surroundings, ever changing and enriching our perceptions of ourselves and the world. © Pentatone

“Water equals time and provides beauty with its double.” Anna Gourari, a pianist with a completely individual naturalness and authority, chooses these words from Joseph Brodsky’s essay on Venice as epigraph to her third recording for ECM. Her programme is typically wide-ranging but tightly focussed, with exquisitely alive performances of slow movements by Bach framing a choice selection of pieces from our own time. A span of three centuries is thus traversed, with magical and moving ease. We find memories of Bach reappearing in the regularly repeating notes of diary entries for piano set down in 2002 by the senior Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin, in a work written for Gourari. And we find in the late Five Aphorisms by Alfred Schnittke strange and beautiful chords that seem to condense whole swathes of Bach’s harmony. This is the “Elusive Affinity” of which the album’s title speaks. The two Bach slow movements are from his transcriptions of concertos by Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Marcello, arrangements in which he retraced these orchestral concertos for his own fingers, bringing to them an intimate privacy that Gourari also conveys throughout this recording. Vivaldi and Marcello were both Venetians, and Venice provides, by elusive affinity, the recording’s imaginary location. Photographs by Luca d’Agostino, reproduced in the booklet, follow Gourari through a Venetian archway, beside an ancient wall, on the edge of the lagoon. Water circulates in the city, enveloping past and present, old and new. So in our awareness, as we listen, Bach’s images of a Venice he never visited swim with others from nearer at hand. These others remind us that Venice, the Mediterranean mirror-image of St. Petersburg, has long been important to Russian artists. Schnittke’s dark pieces sound like shadows cutting across sunlit paving, though there is wit in this music, too. Arvo Pärt, represented by a crucial but largely overlooked early example of his luminous style, evokes bell sounds common to both Venice and the Baltic. Also here are two haunting miniatures by Giya Kancheli and a sequence of memorials to friends by Wolfgang Rihm, where sombreness joins with light, in what is again a Venetian conjunction. © ECM Records

Over the past five years, pianist Anna Vinnitskaya has made three Alpha recordings dedicated to Shostakovitch, Brahms et Rachmaninov. Evgeni Koroliov is a great master of the piano, a great Bach specialist, whose recordings of Bach are an acclaimed benchmark. His piano duo with his wife, Ljupka Hadzi-Georgieva, has made its mark over the past few years in all the major international concert venues. Also a highly reputed teacher, Koroliov was Anna Vinnitskaya’s professor at Hamburg. ‘Though I no longer study with him, I still meet and talk with him several times a week,’ she confides. ‘That helps me further in my development, not just as a pianist but as a human being.’ These three Slavonic pianists, who for some time have been aiming to record the Bach concertos as a team, decided to invite a German ensemble that is itself highly expert in Bach interpretation, the Potsdam Chamber Orchestra; they recorded this double album in a legendary venue where some of the greatest artists have recorded: the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin. © Alpha Classics

Following his recording of J. S. Bach’s solo cantatas for alto BWV 35 and 170 (issued in 2009), countertenor Damien Guillon has continued his work of research and interpretation, devoting a second album to the Cantata BWV 169 for alto solo and to the famous BWV 82 Ich habe genug ; though better known in its 1727 version for bass, from 1735 onwards it was also performed by an alto voice. To complement this cantata programme, organist Maude Gratton performs Bach’s Prelude and Fugue BWV 543, as well as the chorales Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr, BWV 662, BWV 663 & BWV 664. © Alpha Classics

"Piano Book" is a compilation of post-Bach piano music’s greatest hits. Lang Lang puts together a retrospective anthology beginning with J.S. Bach’s Prelude in C major from the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier. The piece, in fully written arpeggio, which every piano student has studied to practice fingering, articulations, and harmonic tiering is followed by Beethoven’s Lettre à Elise. Lang Lang then invites Mendelssohn (La Fileuse), Chopin (15th Prelude from Opus 28), and Mozart (Allegro from Sonata "Semplice" or Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman") The record also includes lesser-known repertoire from such composers as Badarzewska-Baranowska, Czerny, or Clementi and a few Chinese classic and traditional / popular songs from diverse parts of the world.Lang Lang has fun, especially when he plays French music. Performing Debussy’s Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum, he enjoys each afterbeat, plays with the basses, and even sings. © Qobuz
