A challenge. This is a disorienting, provocative, and terribly refreshing album. Before launching headlong into the "Da Ponte-Mozart Trilogy", Raphaël Pichon undertakes a spirited exploration of the themes, throwing all these pieces together into a three-part "pasticcio", with the help of Mozart's earlier works and those of his contemporaries. To do this, Pichon and his arrangers use concert arias, nocturnes, canons, unfinished operas with characters and situations that evoke those of the trilogy. They have thrown together a delicious miniature trilogy "like a sort of musical apéritif." The result is all the more pleasing because it allows us to follow the evolution of Mozart's thought, at the same time as underlining the continuity of his literary choices and situations that he would set to music throughout his short life. Add that to some lively conducting and soloists who have great fun prefiguring the coming masterpieces. The result is a real gourmet feast. © François Hudry/Qobuz

After a first album devoted to Mozart quartets (awarded a ‘Choc de Classica’ and a ‘Diapason Découverte’), a second to French music (Debussy, Ravel and Chausson) and a third to two quartets by Schubert, Nos. 10 and 14 (the mythical "Death and the Maiden"), the group founded by Nicolas Van Kuijk returns to its first love by recording more Mozart. This recording is the second part of an eventual triptych that will contain the six string quartets dedicated to Haydn: No. 14 in G major, K.387, the first of them, was composed in 1782, when Mozart had just arrived on the Viennese musical scene; No. 15 in D minor K421, the second, is the only one in the minor mode and was completed in 1783 while his wife Constanze was in labour – she related that the rising intervals of the second movement recalled her cries from the room next door as he composed. © Alpha Classics/Outhere

Daniel Barenboim is no stranger to complete collections. Glutton that he is, he records them several times over, whether it's Beethoven's Sonatas, or as here, Mozart's Trios (already recorded for EMI in 2006 with violinist Nicolai Znaider and cellist Kyril Zlotnikov). And so it's not the immortal Amadeus that we are hearing so much as a portrait of Barenboim that ages with the years. The accomplished artists create a close dialogue, greedily following each other's music. Amongst all these scores, can we detect an aesthetic vision? The scores follow one after the other, like at a family musical soirée, with a convivial, sweetish piano sound – likely a matter of sound quality rather than sherry consumption – in particular on the Piano Trio in B Flat Major, K.502, but also in the opening passages of the Allegro of the Piano Trio in E Major, K.542, whose dramatic dimension is somewhat lacking here. But at least the piano doesn't overshadow the strings or upset the balance required in these tightly-wound, respected works. Mozart's chamber music isn't simple: the contrapunctual writing builds a delicate world whose poetry is flavoured by harmonies and chromatism. This extraordinary “symphonic massif” consisting of three peaks – Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, completed on 26th June, Symphony No 40 in G minor, completed on 25th July and Symphony No. 41 in C major, the “Jupiter”, dated 10th August – is unquestionably the composer’s “Symphonic Testament”.

The Armida Quartet is holding an unusual kind of rehearsal, skimming through three Mozart string quartets with musicologist and Henle’s publishing director Wolf-Dieter Seiffert. The focus this time is not on sound quality, musical character, or developing an extended formal overview – all qualities for which the Armida Quartet is well-known – but on achieving a good match between philological accuracy and practical music-making. Seiffert is working on a new edition of the Mozart string quartets for his publishing house in Munich, and has sought out direct contact with the members of the Berlin string quartet to clarify doubts regarding dynamics, ties and tempi (see the interview with Mr. Seiffert in the booklet). When a case is truly difficult, the most technically feasible or desirable alternative helps him decide which variant will ultimately figure in the new Urtext edition. © CAvi-Music

Shaham is continuing to keep it in the family with this new album, which takes on two of Mozart's concertos, which she has chosen to record with her husband, David Robertson conducting. Robertson is the conductor of the Saint Louis Chamber Orchestra.Orli Shaham's particular affinity for Mozart was already demonstrated in the recording of sonatas for violin and piano, which she made with her brother: it is confirmed here in this music's rounded, sensual sound and its expressive musicality. It soars into a luminous hedonism in the Piano Concerto No. 17 in G Major, K. 453, with a splendid Andante which is marked by an irresistible melancholy. In Shaham's hands, the torments of the Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491 are softened: they belong to the 18th Century, and do not announce the romanticism imagined by the many performers who see (often correctly) this work as containing a miraculous expressive force which bursts the bounds of its era. © François Hudry/Qobuz
