Piano/bass/drums trios are like small islands which are deserted in spirit and highly populated in reality. And jazz pianists can’t help but keep coming back to visit! Some even live there all year round. For Yaron Herman, playing as a trio means "freedom with constraints": make something new out of something old, don't simply copy the big names (Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Ahmad Jamal...), bend the rules by staying within them and, most importantly, have something to say. The Franco-Israeli jazzman is fully aware of the difficulty and ambiguity of the task. "As a trio, it is not easy to find new things, to make a melody sing, to come up with something moving or illuminating, to place yourself in space, sound and improvisation." Nine years after Follow the White Rabbit, Herman decided to "go back to basics" with this trio album. Songs of the Degrees won’t leave you indifferent. With drummer Ziv Ravitz (who has been by his side on his four previous records) and the Iranian-American double bassist Sam Minaie (Charlie Haden's former student who has worked extensively with Tigran Hamasyan) he has found a rhythmic dream team who understand his compositions perfectly. They are compositions that are reinforced with melodies that you’ll be whistling all day long, the kind that remain imprinted in your brain. What’s more, Yaron Herman displays his flair for the exceptional use of space and silence. It’s in those moments that his playing reaches an organic simplicity that makes Songs of the Degrees one of his most engaging albums yet. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Every album by Anne Paceo is surprising. And each one of her projects is stunning. She’s always where we don't expect her to be. It would be too simplistic to simply label her as a "jazz drummer". With her, the genres have never been so beautifully fluid. Everything inspires her, motivates her, nourishes her. Jazz, of course, is one source of inspiration, but there’s also pop, song, electronic music, world music and blues. "I’ve never liked the boundaries between musical styles," she insists. “It was the record industry that invented those boxes, but music goes beyond that. The important thing is that it speaks to the heart and soul to awaken our emotions, takes us on a journey and inspires us..." With Ann Shirley and Florent Mateo’s voices and her faithful accomplices Pierre Perchaud on guitar, Christophe Panzani on saxophone and Tony Paeleman on keyboards, Paceo has designed a firework display, just as colourful as it is rhythmic. And never being able to label the music of this eclectic Bright Shadow album is an asset that reinforces the mystery of each of her poems. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Once again, the spine, if not the heart of Awase isn’t Nik Bärtsch’s piano. Because whenever the Zurich musician gets his band Ronin going, he builds his music as well as his improvisations around Kaspar Rast’s XXL ability on the drums. As often with this self-proclaimed zen funk gang, the hypnotic power of rhythmic motifs gives a supreme unity to this jazz that sounds like no other. The term Awase comes from martial arts, meaning “moving together” in the sense of matching energies. A fitting metaphor for the dynamic precision, tessellated grooves and balletic minimalism of Bärtsch’s crew. Six years have passed since Ronin’s last release, a live recording in Europe and Japan between 2009 and 2011. In the meantime, the quintet has turned into a quartet and integrated a new bassist, Thomy Jordi. A completely new look for Ronin version 2018… A mutation that delivers a new form of freedom and flexibility in their approach to compositions. Their interactions and energy seem to compound! Once again it’s very hard to resist to the hypnotic power of the motifs they string together with superb fluidity over the 65 minutes of Awase. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Born in Boston to Iranian parents, brought up in Hamburg, and based ever since in Berlin, Malakoff Kowalski is no stranger to crossing borders. And genres too, as becomes clear upon listening to My First Piano, which slaloms between jazz, classical music and contemporary music. "My earliest childhood memories are of lying curled up under the piano stool, listening to my mother playing Bach, Brahms, Schubert and Scriabin. There are not many places or things that feel like home to me. Our family is scattered all over the world and that’s the only way I’ve ever known it. But having my old baby piano with me again, with its ivory white rounded keys, the decorated sound holes and the un-padded stool, just like back then—this all feels a bit like home." This intimacy, this personal relationship to the music, these nostalgically-remembered sensations: all these small things, so important to Kowalski, permeate every note of this superb album. We move from sequence to sequence as if leafing through a photo album. Here, the shadow of Satie, there there St Germain-des-Près where Gainsbourg and Gréco joined hands, there a sketch à la Gonzales and so on. It's an utterly beautiful internal journey. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
