Alice Cooper hadn't had a hugely successful album in over a decade when, in 1989, he teamed up with Bon Jovi producer Desmond Child for Trash -- a highly slick and commercial yet edgy pop-metal effort that temporarily restored him to the charts in a big way. Fueled by the irresistible hit single "Poison," the album temporarily gave back to Cooper the type of visibility he deserved. There's nothing shocking here, and Cooper's ability to generate controversy had long since faded. But while the escapist Trash -- which was clearly aimed at the Mötley Crüe/Guns N' Roses crowd -- may not be the most challenging album of Cooper's career, and isn't in a class with School's Out or Billion Dollar Babies, it's fun and quite enjoyable. And it was great to see the long-neglected Cooper on MTV next to so many of the '80s rockers he had influenced.

Alice Cooper Doesn’t Run from Danger

The Alice Cooper story is, first and foremost, an extraordinary tale of “split personality”. Like something straight out of “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, singer Vincent Furnier surrendered to the domination of showman Alice Cooper. But by his own admission, the man who always speaks of “Alice” in the third person in interviews remains a simple, completely normal guy in private, far from the stage where he enacts his excesses and provocations. Throughout a career stretching over 50 years, there is an evident streak of schizophrenia in his many stylistic changes. While we credit him with the invention of shock rock, he has ventured into almost every genre with varying degrees of success, from pop to nascent hard rock, with forays into heavy metal, new wave and industrial…

Jack White, The Saviour of Rock

From the White Stripes to his time in the solo wilderness, Jack White has been foretelling the doom of a clapped-out rock'n'roll. The genius with a thousand projects has a new prophecy: rock is coming back. While we await its return, here's a look back at the White phenomenon.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
