Whenever he’s not twisting and turning with Jack DeJohnette in Keith Jarrett’s trio (it’s been going on since 1983!), Gary Peacock focuses on his own trio. Along with drummer Joey Baron and bassist Marc Copland, the American double bass player is releasing his second album with a band of impressive calibre. An album recorded in Lugano in May 2016 and produced by Manfred Eicher of ECM. Much like Now This, also released by the label from Munich a year earlier, there is a Himalayan musicality in this album, owing as much to its leader as to his two sidemen – although the term “sidemen” doesn’t apply here – and throughout which none of the protagonists try to draw attention to themselves. Each one contributes to the repertoire (five compositions by Peacock, two by Baron and one by Copland) and the three colleagues reinterpret Miles Davis’ Blue In Green as well as Alex North’s theme for Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, providing a fantastic base for improvisation… Being one of the main figures that helped develop the role of double bass in the 60s, Gary Peacock has always been particularly attached to the melodic fabric of what he plays. And Tangents is only one more proof of this artistic commitment. © MZ/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

Chris Connor, a Forgotten Voice

What if she really was the greatest cool jazz singer of them all? Almost twelve years after she passed away, Chris Connor remains one of the most sensual voices of her generation. After all, there's more to life than Anita O'Day and June Christy...

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit.
