So clean they squeak, and so clear they're almost invisible, these early 90s recordings of Sibelius' First, Second, Third and Fifth Symphonies with Mariss Jansons and the Oslo Philharmonic are no more than tolerable. As was true with the recordings of Tchaikovsky's symphonies by the same artists, these performances may delight listeners who prefer their Romantics dry-eyed and straight-forward. Anyone looking for the First's dark tragedy, the Second's mighty heroism, the Third's unstoppable energy, and the Fifth's overwhelming intensity, though, will not find those qualities here. Jansons' readings are well-controlled and thoroughly thought through, and the Norwegian orchestra's playing is crisp, bright, and colorful. But there is so much more to Sibelius' music, and so many recordings that deliver it, that it is hard to recommend these performances as anything more than alternative points of view, and not particularly interesting alternative points of view, either. EMI's digital sound is transparent but not especially immediate.

The Stylish Henry Mancini

Sophistication, humour, sensitivity… These are the words that often come to mind when describing Henry Mancini’s music. 23 years after his death, he is still seen as a major and influential pop composer. No doubt because, in addition to his glossy and light works for which he is renowned (notably Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Pink Panther), he also knew how to display the complexity of his musical language in more tormented compositions.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

Peter Thomas in Orbit

In Germany they have their own Michel Legrand: his name is Peter Thomas! His eccentric film music left its mark on a whole generation of viewers in the 60s and 70s and since the 90s he has often been cited and sampled by young pop groups. The cult composer passed away on May 17th, 2020. We met him three years earlier, on the dawn of his 92nd birthday.
