Jean-Paul Gasparian

One of France's rising pianists in the late 2010s and early 2020s decades, Jean-Paul Gasparian specializes in mainstream Romantic repertory. He has been heard widely at European festivals. Gasparian was born in Paris in 1995 into a musical family. Both of his parents were pianists. He enrolled as a youth at the Conservatoire de Paris, studying with Olivier Gardon and later with various teachers, including Jacques Rouvier, Michel Beroff, and Michel Dalberto. Graduating in 2009, he went on to the conservatory's solo piano class in 2010 and also studied chamber music with Claire Désert, François Salque, and Michel Strauss. Gasparian also attended the Salzburg Academy in 2010 and the Verbier Academy in 2014, and he took master classes from Elisso Virsaladze and Tatiana Zelikman. Prizes, including those at the Concours Général des Lycéens de France in 2013, the Bremen European Competition in 2014, and the Cziffra Foundation competition in 2015, helped launch his career. In 2015, he performed Schumann's Piano Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22, at the Nohant Festival in France. Another career-builder was a last-minute substitution for an ailing Christian Zacharias in Chemnitz, Germany, in January of 2018. That year, he earned an artist's diploma from the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Vanessa Latarche, and issued a debut album devoted to music by Rachmaninov. Gasparian has appeared with a long list of European orchestras, including the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the Bremer Philharmoniker, and the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen. His repertory includes concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, and Gershwin, among many others. Gasparian has performed at such venues as the Salzburg Mozarteum, the Tonhalle Zürich, and Hamburg's Laeiszhalle. His recital career has been especially prominent at festivals in France and beyond, including the Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron, the Flâneries de Reims, and the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo. In 2019, Gasparian made his debut on the Evidence Classics label with an all-Chopin release. In 2021, he was nominated in the category of Soloist Revelation at France's Victoires de la musique classique awards. The following year, he issued the album Rachmaninoff on Evidence Classics. A recording with the Bern Symphony Orchestra of that composer's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, made after Gasparian won a prize for best recital performance at Switzerland's Gstaad Festival, was also slated for release on the Claves label in 2022.
