While the Streets are still no longer on the scene, Slowthai has taken their place. There is an irrefutable connection between Mike Skinner, also from the Midlands, and Tyron Kaymone Frampton, the bad boy from Northampton who with this album has released a unique firecracker of punky grime. Brexit, class division, daily troubles, domestic violence, the destruction of capitalism and the monarchy, nothing escapes his aggressive lyrical assault on the idea of Britishness. His mother is from Barbados and had him at sixteen years old. His father left the scene when he was three. No wonder those Xanax boxes have been adding up…

Nothing Great About Britain is, however, no copy of The Streets’ first albums. Constructed like a kind of intimate diary, he combines social criticism with humor and cynicism in an unprecedented fashion. Behind the controls for most of the tracks is producer Kwes Darko who creates a soundtrack that merges grime beats with minimalist rap, electro and hints of rock’n’roll. Slowthai has not only drawn inspiration from the likes of Skepta or Stormzy; his DNA is particularly punk. Features include: grime legend Skepta (Inglorious), Jaykae (Grow Up), the punks Slaves (Missing) and the producer Mura Masa (Doorman). All contribute to a punchy album that reminds us of the singular force of British rap. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Australian Rap: Artists that Shaped the Scene

One thing is clear: a new generation of Australian artists is appropriating rap in their own way, injecting a great dose of African music and deep sounds. But since its emergence in the late 1980s, local rap has always stood out from its American big brother. Often brilliantly.

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence.

Run The Jewels: Stick it to the Man

As they neared their fortieth birthdays, Killer Mike (a black rapper from Atlanta with close links to OutKast) and El-P (a white Brooklyn b-boy and proponent of experimental rap) formed Run The Jewels, a rap supergroup which could easily have been yet another addition to a long list of hiphop misfires. But on the contrary, they are now an institution, a group that delights audiences and awakens consciences. Their new album RTJ4 is their most political and devastating. Let us take a look back at Killer Mike and El-P’s story.
