Here’s an album that doesn’t have a single note out of place. Would we expect anything less from Denzel Curry? After the incredible ZUU in 2019, then his collaborative project with Kenny Beatz, UNLOCKED, which was released the following year, Melt My Eyez See Your Future is confrontational and immersed in tropical soul. The Florida-born rapper has forged a new sound, taking inspiration from De La Soul and Dilated Peoples, proof that straddling alternative rap and Atlanta’s fury is a winning mix. To complement his masterful performance, he invites a tantalising list of guest artists, including T-Pain on Troubles and Saul Williams on Mental, as well as a magical trio consisting of JID, 6LACK and Rico Nasty on the amazing Ain’t No Way. Denzel Curry is always in control of his rage and his delight, and skilfully mixes eras together. For example, in the last track Ills, where a smooth jazz piano remind us of where his inspiration began. On the production side, there’s Thundercat and Dot Da Genius as well as Robert Glasper and JPEGMafia.
