Women Composers: A Secret History

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho, music history has been marked by female figures who “dared” to write music. Is creation a male privilege? Our sound museum does hold more well-known and recognised male than female composers. Yet their works are no less exciting and there is absolutely no reason for them to play second fiddle, or be ignored altogether. Below, you’ll find a defence and illustration of female composition works through eleven musical portraits.

Peter Thomas in Orbit

In Germany they have their own Michel Legrand: his name is Peter Thomas! His eccentric film music left its mark on a whole generation of viewers in the 60s and 70s and since the 90s he has often been cited and sampled by young pop groups. The cult composer passed away on May 17th, 2020. We met him three years earlier, on the dawn of his 92nd birthday.

Herbert Von Karajan and The Grand Masters of Classical Music

30 years after his death, the Austrian Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 – Anif 1989) still embodies the musical conductor like no other. In charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years (1955-1989), Karajan helped to elevate the orchestra to a level of global prestige.
