Mendelssohn composa en 1826, à l'âge de 17 ans, l'Ouverture de cette œuvre fameuse. Il compléta la partition 16 ans plus tard, pour en faire la musique de scène de la pièce de Shakespeare. L'auditeur admire encore aujourd'hui l'adéquation parfaite de cette composition à l'esprit magique et bariolé de l'œuvre littéraire.
    Cette excellente interprétation propose entre les pièces musicales quelques extraits du texte original parlé.
