For his new recording of this monument to Bach, John Eliot Gardiner is limited to a light chamber orchestra (obviously the English Baroque Soloists, founded here 37 years ago by Gardiner!), a choir of reasonable size (the Monteverdi Choir, same remark...), and a meticulous - but above all, calm - conducting of the articulations, phrases and lines, almost like a kind of chamber opera. The tempos are rather upbeat, like baroque music back in its heyday - the perfect balance between respecting history and the quest for beauty of sound. Gardiner has nothing dogmatic - making this new recording a particularly welcome perspective among the ample discography(yet unsatisfactory) of this Mass en si. © SM / Qobuz

In your panoramas...
10 Versions of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique

As a proper manifesto of French romanticism, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique marked the 19th century as much as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring impacted the 20th. Composed in Paris − which at the time was a global crucible for artistic creation − these two masterpieces catapulted musical language into another dimension. On December 5th, 1830 the revolutionary work of 27-year-old Hector Berlioz deeply moved the musicians present in the small room of the old academy of music, among whom were Meyerbeer and Liszt, who were impressed by the extraordinary audacity of this piece presented just three years after Beethoven’s death.

Gounod: the Romantic, the Mystic

A major artisan of the renaissance in French music in the second half of the 19th century, alongside his elder colleague Berlioz, whom he admired, and his followers Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Massenet, who were inspired by his faith in Art, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), a mystic and a charmer, a romantic in search of a new classicism, owed his fame to a few masterpieces, which have overshadowed his daring. A flourishing discography allows us to discover the diversity of his music: instrumental, vocal, religious, and lyrical.
