Once past the Bob Marley tree, many reggae fans discovered the depth and diversity of the Jamaican music forest through the compilations of Trojan Records, some of which became true Proust madeleines. For the occasion of the label's 50th birthday, Qobuz looks back over the fluctuating trajectory of the label, together with Laurence Cane-Honeysett, curator of Trojan Records and author of the book The Story of Trojan Records.
Norman Granz hit the nail on the head when he defined his label as “the sound of America”. Admittedly, it was last century. And granted, it mainly just stuck to jazz. But even today, with a catalogue including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson and countless others, Verve represents one of the most important musical ventures of the twentieth century.
A fusion of West African rhythms, jazz, funk and soul, twenty years on from the disappearance of its shamanic creator, Afrobeat continues to influence hordes of musicians to this day. An inferno of horns and a thick tangle of rhythms: Fela Anikulapo Kuta invented the most thrilling trance of the 70s and 80s.
