This live set (recorded at Hollywood's Vine St. Bar and Grill) was Shirley Horn's "comeback" album after many years in which she purposely maintained a low profile as she raised her daughter. Typical of Horn's music ever since, she sings intimate ballads with her trio (which includes bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams) and plays very effective piano behind her vocals, taking "Isn't It Romantic" as an instrumental.

In your panoramas...
Frank Zappa, for Better or for Laughs

The more time that goes by since Frank Zappa’s passing on December 4, 1993, the more his absence is cruelly felt in the music world. It's not that we have forgotten him, but we have been searching in vain for someone to fill his boots. Frank Zappa’s genius, both cosmic and comical, has no equivalent today, this is because no one, in almost three decades, has been able to combine such a high level of musical talent with such a brilliant sense of humor. Something Zappa did so well.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.

Betty Davis, The Funk Panther

Without her, there would be no Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse or Janelle Monáe! Despite having disappeared from the music scene for years, Betty Davis remains a pioneer of feline soul sisters. The ultimate funk goddess. She also brought electricity to a certain Miles Davis who she would go on to marry, if only for a short while. But who are you Betty?
