To all appearances, there is nothing new under the sun. The guitar is made of wood. Unsurprisingly, the voice is pure, limpid and almost crystalline. And the stripped-down melodies are reminiscent of the Indian summer. However, Haley Heynderickx isn’t the 2547th folk fairy, just there to swell the ranks of a caste into which a lot of people already try to get in… Since her first album, I Need To Start A Garden, the young songwriter from Portland has been imposing her personality, her voice and her style. With her Filipino roots, her religious education and her good assimilation of the art of her female colleagues from yesterday (Vashti Bunyan) and from today (Sharon Van Etten), this fan of Leo Kottke, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan punctuates the stripped-down aspect of her music with oneiric piano and muffled bass. A trombone also appears here and there. As for her arrangement, she displays a rare finesse accented by her rather virtuoso guitar playing. They make her compositions grow and even offer to her singing a most beautiful setting. All in all, this is a true revelation. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
