Sunflower Bean promised copious amounts of sugar with the title of their third album, and they didn’t disappoint. However, this New York trio only offers a surface level sweetness, sugar coating a rather disillusioned outlook of the modern world. On Baby Don’t Cry, the singer and bassist Julia Cumming lambasts the media for “driving her crazy” (“The TV makes me so mad / NPR is always telling me something bad / Everything made in a boardroom gets pumped straight into my head”). Money-hungry corporations find themselves in the firing line on Roll the Dice (“Nothing in this life is really free / I just want to win“). Alongside singer and guitarist Nick Kivlen and drummer Olive Faber, Cumming expresses real resilience throughout the album (which is more positive and upbeat than you might think). Whether it’s through their lyrics or their melodies, Sunflower Bean relentlessly add fuel to a tired machine, like in the disco pop track Post Love or the cheerful In Flight, an ode to giving yourself room to breathe. Then there’s I Don’t Have Control Sometimes with its raging drums, as well as Beat the Odds with electric guitars that are equally explosive. The future is terrifying, but there’s still beauty to be found despite it all: it feels like this is what Sunflower Bean are trying to say with their energetic third release. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

The Black Keys in 10 Songs

From 2001, The Black Keys have been reminding the world about the real roots of the Blues, cutting away all the frills and unnecessary solos. Their music has always been untamed, abrupt and minimalist. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney developed this unique style over the course of two decades, without once selling their souls to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads. Here are ten songs to prove it.

The Women of Nashville

It's not easy to elbow your way through the macho Music City scene, the birthplace of country music, when you're a woman. Over the years, some of them have nevertheless managed to shift lines and attitudes, like these ten pioneers and revolutionaries who have put – even stamped – their boots on Nashville's table.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.
