Three-quarters female, The Chiaroscuro Quartet which was founded in 2005 comes from all over Europe. The first violin from Russia, the second from Spain, the violist is Swedish and the cellist French. They all speak Haydn in the same language and with the same breath of youth and ardour. They play on gut strings that give the ensemble a warm sound, and a supple and graceful style. This new album is an enriching addition to their complete collection of Haydn's quartets for the excellent Swedish label BIS.

Wonderfully constructed and profound, the six quartets in Opus 76 are the last series Haydn completed. Composed after the quartets that Mozart had dedicated to him and at the same time as Beethoven's first sallies into the genre; they represent the peak of Haydn's genius.

The musicians of The Chiaroscuro Quartet present the second half of the corpus here, after publishing the first in May 2020. From the magical opening (Sunrise) of Quartet No. 4 to the dazzling Finale of Quartet No. 6, the whole vocabulary of the mature Haydn unfolds through these pages. Alternating between tears, comedy and surprises in a learned and refined writing style which is in constant evolution, these pieces are performed wonderfully by our four instrumentalists who are well-versed in Joseph Haydn's world. © François Hudry/Qobuz

In your panoramas...
Koechlin, the Alchemist

Deeply rooted in both tradition and innovation, the immense work of Koechlin bewildered his contemporaries due to its many facets, its freedom and its philosophical dimension. The album finally allows us to grasp the full measure of this sound alchemist and brilliant prophet who, most probably, was born before his time… We’ll be thinking of him on November 27th, the date marking 150 years since his birth.

The Earth’s Song: The World of Gustav Mahler

What could have prompted Gustav Mahler to compose a work as unclassifiable as this one? Written between 1907 and 1908, a pivotal period in Mahler's life, The Song of the Earth occupies a special place within his oeuvre. It combines the “fin de siècle” spirit with the fascination for the exotic that was spreading amongst his peers at the time. Vienna was in turmoil when this music was composed, and the piece oscillates between the notions of farewell and new beginnings. With a lot of layers to peel back, The Song of the Earth definitely merits a closer look.

François Couperin, the modern harpsichord

A favourite of Louis XIV, François Couperin (1668-1733) was the harpsichord superstar of the 18th century. At the time, the harpsichord was a prestigious instrument which was at the height of its fame (although it would return to obscurity in the following century), and Couperin revolutionised the way it was played, breaking a path that would later be trod by other virtuosos of the period like Dandrieu or Rameau. The Quebecois harpsichordist Olivier Fortin tells Qobuz the story of "Couperin the Great".
