"So I’m a complicated motherfucker. You knew that." Say what you may, Lloyd Cole’s statement on Night Sweats from Guesswork, is honest. Besides being « complicated », the Brit is entirely hard to grasp. This 2019 release, with its electronic vibes, will undoubtedly turn off some of his early fans. During his 35 year career, Lloyd Cole has published 14 albums, three of which were made with the Commotions (Rattlesnakes, 1984, Easy Pieces, ‘85 and Mainstream in 1987), nine solo albums - (Lloyd Cole in 1990, Don’t Get Weird On Me Babe in 1991, Bad Vibes in 1993, Love Story in 1995, Plastic Wood in 2001, Music In A Foreign Language in 2003, Anti Depressant in 2006, Broken Record in 2010 and Standards in 2013), one with the Negatives (The Negatives, 2000) and one with Hans Joachim Roedelius (Selected Studies Vol. 1 in 2013). Although the impeccable songwriting, the Byrds-ish pop know-how, and his warm voice are all consistent values, the literary songwriter has always had a one-track mind. Guesswork was essentially recorded in his Massachusetts studio, with three old pals: guitarist Neil Clark, drummer Fred Maher and Blair Cowan on keys.
