Following a beautiful and quite daring duo album with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith (A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke), Vijay Iyer releases an impressively rich record. His first as a sextet, which is actually his usual trio (with Stephan Crump on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums), with the addition of Graham Haynes’ trumpet, and Steve Lehman and Mark Shim’s saxophones. A very modern jazz ensemble that launches into a mad and plural swerving action, drawing from both electric Miles from the end of the 60s (Iyer playing the Fender Rhodes - stunning) and European jazz, even slightly world jazz. The bar is set high, with the pianist from New York playing some ambitious compositions. By his sides, his accomplices deliver improvisations that switch between cerebral and sensual, diving head first in their leader’s themes. More than anything, this album confirms the talent of one of the most fascinating pianists of his generation. © MZ/Qobuz

Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

Impulse! Orange was the New Black

Along with Blue Note and Verve, Impulse! is without doubt one of the best-known American jazz labels. Painted in orange and black, the label not only brought us John Coltrane, but also some of the most adventurous musicians of the 1960s.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit.
