The neglect of Donizetti's Il Castello di Kenilworth is hard to understand. The opera was first performed in 1829, as Elisabetta al Castello di Kenilworth, and it was the first in a series of operas devoted to Tudor England; it's far less common than Anna Bolena (1830) and Maria Stuarda (1834). Those operas may have refined the formula a bit, but it was this work that created many of the moves. It has rarely been recorded, and this live performance from the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo will be welcomed by Donizetti fans. The plot, taken from the novel Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott, revolves around a visit by Queen Elizabeth to the titular castle, forcing the Earl of Leicester to hide his new bride in a prison from the possibly disapproving Queen. There she is assaulted by the Earl's horse-keeper, leading to machinations and recriminations. The real star of the show is veteran opera conductor Riccardo Frizza, who keeps the action moving and finds the many signs of the later Donizetti. Sample the hunt duet "Della caccia il lieto segno" to hear how Donizetti was developing the integration of action and melody that would soon make him the primary influence on the young Verdi. The singers run from adequate (Jessica Pratt as Elisabetta) to compelling (Carmela Remigio as the young bride Amelia). Recommended, and essential for Donizetti lovers.

Strauss & Kempe: Elective Affinities

The name of conductor Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) is indissociable from those of composer Richard Strauss and the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra. As Warner is now re-releasing the recordings made between 1970 and 1975, Qobuz is putting the spotlight on the Straussian legacy of a precise, often incisive conductor, who always paid the greatest attention to the text and its charms.

Mason Bates' weird and wonderful electronic symphonies

What do you mean, you haven’t heard about Mason Bates (yet)? He is one of the hottest names on the North-American music scene. Born in 1977, Bates is a symphonic and lyrical composer as well as an electro DJ (under the alias DJ Masonic) – two completely opposing genres which he takes great delight in mixing. Around half of his symphonic and lyrical work consists, in one way or another, of electronic sounds. The majority of these sounds are “every day sounds”, which are prerecorded and later put into a score. On the release date of his brilliant opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, Qobuz interviewed this extraordinary person.

Maria Callas "dal vivo"

Breathtaking in its range, Maria Callas’s recorded legacy becomes all the more astonishing when we consider that her studio opera recordings were all made within the space of just over a decade: she recorded no fewer than 24 complete works between 1952 and 1960 (and most of them between 1953 and 1957). Soon after moving to Paris, she added Carmen and a second Tosca to the list, in 1964 and 1965 respectively. Her complete studio recordings, including a series of celebrated recital discs, all painstakingly remastered from the original tapes, were released in a luxury box set by Warner Classics in 2014. This is our reproduction, with the kind permission of Warner Music, of Michel Roubinet’s introductory text in the album booklet ‘Maria Callas Live’.
