Though it's a close race, Kruder & Dorfmeister make for better DJs than producers, as witnessed by their volume in the DJ-Kicks series. Beginning with downbeat trip-hop including Herbaliser, Statik Sound System, and Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister flow through jazzy drum'n'bass (with Aquasky and JMJ & Flytronix) and techno (with Hardfloor and Showroom Recordings). K&D sound much more relaxed and involved than on their own G-Stoned EP.

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence.

DJ-Kicks: the history of the compilation that redefined electronic music

“DJ-Kicks is the most important DJ mix series of all time,” wrote Mixmag, the leading magazine for electronic music in England. It’s hard to fault them: since 1995, the German label !K7 hasn’t made the slightest mistake on more than 60 volumes by entrusting their mixes to incomparable artists. A pioneer of the genre at a time when the format wasn’t commonplace, the label managed to release club mixes by making electronic music accessible to the mainstream audience.
