Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band -- their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. Knopfler also shows an inclination toward Dylanesque imagery, which enhances the smoky, low-key atmosphere of the album. The album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career.

Interpol, Fade to Black

At the dawn of the new millennium, when garage was king, the New York quartet that then became a trio exploded onto the scene by reviving the dark romanticism of 80’s post-punk.

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Guns N' Roses, the greed justifies the means

As the sales of the legendary Appetite For Destruction approach the 20 million copies in the United States, who remembers today that it almost never saw the light of day? Not only the bonds uniting Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler were fragile, but fate seemed set against this band which seemed to be slow to catch on to Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Cinderella or Dokken. This is almost as a kindness that David Geffen had accepted to welcome this homeless band on his label. He would not regret his altruism…
