It's one of those fairy stories that the world of lyrical music likes to keep secret. Still an unknown and barely emerged from the La Scala Lyrical Academy, Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili was given the title role in Carmen by Baremboim, alongside Jonas Kaufman: an international career seemed to beckon for the young singer. And so here we will hear some of opera's great tunes, including, of course, the hits from Carmen, but also the two great arias from Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns, a pair from Verdi, a touch of Mascagni, some Rimski – less-frequently performed, it is true – and a rarity from his compatriot Dimitri Arakishvili (1873-1953) whose style is solidly anchored in the Russia of his day, with several, probably regional, twists. Since 2009, she has sung Carmen's role around three hundred times, and we can only hope that she never gets bogged down in it - and takes on Santuzza, Eboli, Dalil: in other words, the great characters of the dramatic mezzo repertoire. © SM/Qobuz

The Teatro Massimo, Palermo's treasure

Qobuz recently travelled to Palermo to meet the Diva Angela Gheorghiu, who was there to sing Adrienne Lecouvreur in the Teatro Massimo. But let's give the theatre its full name: the Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele! Spiritually and geographically, it is at the heart of the Sicilian capital. A contemporary of the Garnier opera house, it is a grandiose monument built in the neoclassical style which flourished in many parts of the world at the end of the 19th Century. It is the biggest opera house in Italy and the third-largest opera house in Europe after Paris (Palais Garnier) and Vienna. We met Francesco Giambrone, sovrintendante del Teatro Massimo…

What a story! Angela. The woman, the career, the discs.

PALERMO, October 2017. – Charming, funny, mischievous, open, this is the impression that Angela Gheorghiu gave us when we at Qobuz met her recently for the release of her latest album. You have to be wary of reputations, and especially of the one that paints Gheorghiu only as a capricious shrew. More than that, she’s a woman who reflects upon the image she gives off… and who wants to do her best. She struggles against what Philippe Beaussant called “Malscène” (junk scene) in an essay published in 2005 —as we say junk food in the world of cuisine. In tune with the academician and musicologist deceased in 2016, Angela Gheorghiu fights a desperate battle against directors who, according to her, destroy the masterpieces of lyrical art by denaturing them instead of serving them.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
