Op All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu horen we hoe de singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright alle opera tierelantijnen van zijn uit 2007 afkomstige album Release the Stars weglaat om een ernstig en diep persoonlijke verzameling nummers af te leveren. Wainwright vergezelt zichzelf hier simpelweg op piano, waardoor de teksten van deze poëtische, introspectieve nummers en zijn stem centraal komen te staan. De herinnering aan Wainwrights moeder, Kate McGarrigle, die in 2010 kwam te overlijden na langdurige ziekte, drukt zwaar op dit hele album. Het is duidelijk dat Wainwright het meeste schreef en opnam van All Days Are Nights tijdens haar ziekte. De thema’s verlies, depressie en verdriet doordrenken deze nummers. Het resultaat is een dapper, absoluut emotioneel naakte statement die nog steeds Wainwrights verwoestende talent voor kunstzinnige, universeel boeiende schrijfkunst bevat.
