Centraal thema op het nieuwe album is sterfelijkheid. Zo schreef hij "50,000" na het overlijden van Prince en David Bowie. Daarnaast kraakt hij in enkele songs ook politieke thema's. Toch is 57th & 9th geen zwaarmoedig album en dat is vooral te danken aan de energieke popsongs die Sting voor het album componeerde.
