Desmond Dekker was the first Jamaican reggae artist to break through in the United States, when his powerful and anthemic tune "Israelites" rose to number nine on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart in 1969. While "Israelites" was the first time most Americans had ever heard of Desmond Dekker, he was already a major star at home, cutting well-mannered ska singles (such as "Honour Your Mother and Father") since 1963 before moving on to more full-bodied rocksteady and reggae sounds with pointed and thoughtful lyrics as the decade wore on, scoring hits like "007 (Shanty Town)" (featured prominently on the soundtrack of the film The Harder They Come), "Rude Boy Train," "It Gotta Be So," and "The Song We Used to Sing (Where Did It Go)." 007: The Best of Desmond Dekker is a two-disc collection that features 25 classic hits from Dekker's catalog, as well as another 25 rare and unreleased sides including alternate takes of some of the artist's fan favorites of the '60s and '70s.

Trojan: 50 Years of Digging Reggae

Once past the Bob Marley tree, many reggae fans discovered the depth and diversity of the Jamaican music forest through the compilations of Trojan Records, some of which became true Proust madeleines. For the occasion of the label's 50th birthday, Qobuz looks back over the fluctuating trajectory of the label, together with Laurence Cane-Honeysett, curator of Trojan Records and author of the book The Story of Trojan Records.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit, even forty-five years after its release.

Reggaeton in 10 Albums

A combination of Jamaican dancehall, American hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and Spanish wit, reggaeton has, since its birth in the early 90s, shaken the world of pop music time and time again. From DJ Playero’s first mixtapes to Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” and Don Chezina’s “Tra-Tra-Tra, Puerto Rican musicians and their Colombian counterparts in Medellin have done their utmost to take over the world. In the last decade, they have done just that thanks to artists such as Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. Read on for 10 of the genre’s most important albums. Reggaeton won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
