Finalement, en 1965, les Who étaient peut-être les premiers punks, fragilisant l’establishment anglais à coup de My Generation et autres The Kids Are Alright… Ces premières années pour les Who, alors vénérés par les mods, étaient sculptées au rock énergique fronçant les sourcils, porté par la guitare furibarde de Pete Townshend. Épaulé par la basse bodybuildée de John Entwistle, la batterie apocalyptique de l’allumé Keith Moon et le chant gouailleur de Roger Daltrey, le rhythm’n’blues indompté de ces Who s’imposait d’entrée de jeu entre Beatles, Stones et Kinks. Par la suite, Daltrey et Townshend oseront la pop psychédélique, le rock planant, la power pop et même le rock bien plus heavy… Ils pousseront même leurs excès vers la grandiloquence du lyrique, signant des opéra-rock entrés dans la légende (Tommy et Quadrophenia).
